Re: You need to own two cable modems to open a ticket

said by TSI Marc:

I'm not even sure how that's meant to work given that they'd need to have the proper MAC address?? Even if you borrow a modem, I guess you can see if the other modem works but depending what speed or service they signed up too it may not be a direct one to one test. And if you went there and tested in their house who knows what line conditions might be like. More to the point though is that the incumbents own customers would not be able to really test their modem. Seems like an awfully tall order to 'test' the modem? What does that actually mean to 'test' a modem??? How do they get their own customers to test their modem? Why are we suddenly being asked to have the modem tested?

I see a business opportunity for me here. I've been cruising around testing DSL at the demarc for years and now I guess customers on cable TPIA also if this wacky requirement sticks.

Send me a PM. Any other techs out there too while I'm at it.

Or even an outlet... Customers could at least show up at the outlet with their modems.

I'm an anon, and don't have an account or I would be inundated with crap from the BTS idiots who frequent the Bell forum, and can't PM but I'll watch this development closely.

Test modems will have to be periodically validated to ensure they are working tho.

You can set up an account with a different name and only use that for pm while keeping your anon one.

For someone like me I would purchase whatever the Rogers techs carry, if it wasn't a crazy price, and test at the cable port as there is no demarc for cable like the DSL/Voice ISW tariffs. In the alternative I would carry what is considered "industry standard" and test with that.

The cable equivalent of a demarc is the coax cable that's attached to the modem. Whenever I've had a tech a my place they've always tested in two places, at the entrance to the house before the first split and at the modem.

Provision and maintenance of coax to the modem, or TV, has been and still is the sole responsibility of the service provider in accordance with existing tariffs. However contractors get into issues sometimes with rewires, retrofits and new construction where we may verify at the last tap or split. That said if we go with the existing splitter config dB loss, ingress and egress is rarely an issue with coax on prem using RG6 and snap-n-seal connectors.

I would think the best Solution for the Moment Is to Go to someones home with your Modem test it there as it is Provisioned, And if it works with good speed etc.. then you know its working then take it home. Works much better than trying to find a known good Modem for testing Purposes in your circle of friends that someone wants to take for a drive p:)

Will a modem work in a different city?
Suppose the only way to test a modem is to take it from Ottawa to a friend in Toronto, will it still be provisioned there?

Wow, that's pretty sad. I'm fairly certain Rogers even has something written in their terms and conditions forbidding people from using a modem at another location.

If you take a modem from one location to another that is on a different CMTS, your modem may even get blacklisted as Rogers may flag it as someone potentially cloning a cable modem's MAC.

Rogers TOS: "You may not re-locate such Equipment without our knowledge and permission;"

A quick question from South of the Border...... Who owns the modem at the customer's premises ?

Maybe TSI could keep a list of volunteers in each city who be willing to help test other customers.

If the volunteers get called upon too often, they will soon want Tim-Bits, and maybe even real pay, I would think.

However, the silliness/stupidity of this situation is that we ALL know what the REAL problem is, and it's NOT a 'Big Bad Batch' of cable modems floating around out there !

It's Rogers' nodes & CMTS units being overloaded in some 'hoods, and TSI's POIs in others.

"Dammit, Jim", why the hell do we need extra modems ?!

Rogers is simply dragging their feet on their OWN upgrades, AND on those of TSI's links, and making Marc, TSI, and TSI's subscribers jump thru yet one more political hoop.

Maybe Bell will be on the other side of THIS latest hoop !

I'm not even in an area where I can use this Rogers-partnered cable service, and I promise you that I am right about wassup !

Oh, and Marc, thanks weighing in on part of my last question.

But what about TSI also doing the FREE DRY LOOPS for 24 months, which Acanac seems to be offering as part of one big March Promo ?

It sure looks like Bell is behind that part too.
