dslx_nick posted : DNS is sort of like an internet phone book. You put in a name or URL (www.website.com), it returns the number or IP (123.456.789.012) your computer needs to reach the website in question. If there were a major problem with our DNS servers (not just something minor like, a specific website not being listed), then it'd be noticed really fast, so I'm fairly certain that's not the problem.

If there's a problem with your computer specifically not being able to process DNS requests due to a stopped service or the like (rather than a problem with the server itself), then that could explain the difficulty you seem to be encountering, but I doubt that's happening either.

A far more likely scenario is that your connection is running into some intermittency due to factors such as line conditions. You mention "We're no longer paying low rates" and "premium pricing" so that would suggest to me that you recently upgraded your service to a higher tier... it's quite possible that your line is straining under those higher speeds.

Bear in mind that conditions which would hinder your line quality (such as an unfiltered phone on the line) CAN be overcome to some degree if you're not pushing the envelope of what your line can do (a lot like how if you forget to release the parking brake all the way, you CAN drive your car slowly if you push on the gas), but once you try to get higher performance those conditions need to be addressed (you're not going to be able to drive down the freeway with your parking brake set!). As such, even if everything was working fine at a lower speed, if you recently upgraded I would double-check the phones in your house and make sure they all have DSL filters in place.

If you're still having trouble, however, please feel free to register on this site (it's free) and then send me a PM with your account information, and I'll have a tech look into this further for you.

anon posted : Back in the day, DSL Extreme had a notorious problem with connections going off from time to time. If I recall correctly, it was a problem the DNS services.

For the past couple weeks, I've been encountering this problem again. It is quite annoying. Luckily it doesn't stay off too long, but it freaks you out thinking that the outage will be long especially when you rely on internet connection for work and school.

Please fix this issue once and for all. And in case these recent outages were due to maintenance, please do them during off hours in the future.

We're no longer paying low rates, so with premium pricing this complaint and suggestion is justified.

Thank you in advance.
