'Essentials Broadband' Service Capped at 5 GB Monthly for $5

FAIL

I don't know how many would voluntarily put cell level limits on their wireline broadband for $5 off. But for TW, it locks in an opportunity to make an additional $25 more a month in overages.

I'd say so. In December, they actually boosted the speeds of the two lowest plans they have, Basic and Lite, from 768kbps/128kbps and 1.5Mbps/384kbps respectively, to 1Mbps/1Mbps and 3Mbps/1Mbps respectively. They didn't say in the article whether or not this was also being applied in Buffalo, but I know of a few people who use those packages who would not be pleased with the data allowance.

So that's why Ted Stevens tubes were clogged.

According to TWC, you can switch back and forth between the limited and unlimited plans as many times as you want. So, at least for the time being, there is no "locking in". They also give you 60 days of a grace period before you get hit with overages.

The more interesting part, to me, is that they're promising to continue offering unlimited internet. They even admit that they've been profitable doing so.

While that is great to hear, I have to wonder where they plan to take this. Seems like way too much complexity to save a few people $5 and possibly charge them an additional $20 if they're not paying attention to their usage (overages are capped at $25).

This would make more sense if low cost packages were stuck with tiering, while the more expensive packages had the unlimited "feature". That would force heavy users out of the cheap tiers, which seems fair enough to me.

If you're Granny Jones who only uses their 'net connection to check e-mails and surf Facebook you won't go over 5GB. For the rest of us, TWC has higher-tier plans.

And TW is only offering her a $5 discount which is why it's fail. If she so happens to go over she can be charged up to $25 a month. Being that granny probably doesn't know a gigabyte from a dog bite that could easilly happen.

Also just leaving the PC on like I do 24/7 can use a few GB a month in upload not to mention auto-updates from MS.

I says 15 GB cap, $15 discount and $1 per 5 GB over not $1 per 1 GB over

You're going to start your own ISP?

I'd do a better job than most of them since they don't seem to understand the whole internet thing.

There is nothing wrong with the concept, only the detail.

When they initially offered UBB last year, it was a $15 package, before the peanut gallery of "consumer activists" shouted them down.

If it were a cheap base package, i.e. $15 for 1GB, plus $1/GB, that would sell like hotcakes.
