| [CenturyTel] CenturyLink NW Indiana Terrible Speeds At Nite Hello, I live in NW Indiana, and my speeds at night are so terrible it makes me want to cry. I have had techs come out to the house and check speeds multiple times and spoke to multiple people from century link on the phone to no avail. The tech even changed my port and still no relief. This problem has been going on for months. I am paying for a 10meg service and im receiving around 1meg or less at nights.
The last time i had a tech come out to the house he finally told me that century link has over sold the service and theres nothing they can do about it. They keep getting the same calls about slow speeds at night and go through the motions of showing up and testing knowing full well that theres nothing wrong and the problem is all on century links side. He even told me to bear with it because they are running some kind of line to ft wayne and from ft wayne he didnt know where it was going or how long it was going to take.
I feel like im being held hostage with no rescue in sight. I am a very long term customer of Embark and now century link. I am not satisfied with my service and feel like i shouldnt be charged for 10meg when im only receiving 1meg, as far as im concerned century link has stolen from me and theres not a thing i can do about it. I know what people are going to say like write your congressman start a class action lawsuit or talk to century link about my bill to try and get some of my money back, but in reality i know none of this will do any good.
I keep coming back to dsl reports and reading on how century link has helped people with their problems or hasnt helped them, to kind of find some kind of ray of sunshine or hope or anything positive to help me. Its almost like going to a AA meeting "Hi my name is sadface and im being screwed over by century link"
I am a competitive gamer i have been in top 100 world ranked guilds in wow (for those of you who dont know about world of warcraft basically 12 million people play and it takes 25 or 10 people to make a guild). I am in that top 1% of people who dominate the game. I also watch tv from my pc. I do not own a television. I do most of my activities in the evening. I can no longer be competitive i can no longer can watch tv from my pc without great hassle.
I really dont have anything to say other then century link has lied to the public taken profits from ill gotten gains through the over selling of their poorly planed telecommunication infrastructure. I suggest if you can leave century link and find another ISP please do so or you will be in the same boat as I am.

| I'm experiencing the same problem. My fiber service turns to crap every evening and it's trash until 10 PM. My bandwidth is sufficient enough, but my pings are horrendous. I did not have these problems with CenturyLink DSL. |

YOU'D THINK THESE CENTURYLINK MORONS WOULD CREDIT US ON OUR BILLS FOR THE SH**TY SPEEDS WE'VE ALL BEEN GETTING. IF IT WEREN'T FOR THE BANDWIDTH CAP MIDWAY.NET HAS, OR THE BANDWIDTH CAP NWIIS HAS, I'D BE GOING WITH THEM. BUT ALAS, I AM UP SH*T CREEK WITHOUT A PADDLES. IF I HAVE TO DO ANY DOWNLOADING, I DO IT AFTER MIDNIGHT.

I rely on a steady connection with good speeds. I have a static IP for vnc, I broadcast on a shoutcast stream, and I do alot of graphics and photo work and touchups that require for me to have a good connection.
I'd give anything for a OC line direct, but I don't have an extra testicle to sell to get it.
I HATE CENTURYLINK WITH A PASSION! Netnitco was better than these a**holes.

Wheatfield here, basically im your neighbor. CTL should never have over sold its capacity. I mean when is enough money enough? Its like selling tickets to a concert and over selling them then tell the people who couldnt get into the stadium "just put your ear to the wall and listen".
My speeds are terrible as always and hasnt changed every night same thing. This has been going on for months. I am 500ft from a comcast connection and basically its been that way for years now. They wont extend to my location. I should have started shoveling a trench back then I could have had cable by now. |

| It's not just you, here its coming to the end of one straight month of unusable Internet after 3 or 4pm... (the only time you actually need it to work)
It seems to be the entire network from coast to coast, mainly rural and small markets because they literally don't care and are just gonna keep taking our money and spitting n our faces... |

Just had another downtime, but oddly enough my ping times are decreased now, I used to ping at 20-28 to google.com and now I'm pinging at 13.
Edit: Now things have returned to normal except I keep constantly disconnecting. |

I think your ping times got better because, alot of people in the south were dodging tornados. |

I notice this on my connection at work. I have PRTG installed on our server, which logs various WMI and SNMP sensors and I have one that just pings google every 30 seconds. I notice the ping fluctuates from a solid 15 ms, to a solid 22 ms, and back and forth like every couple minutes or so. Not sure why the routing changes so often. No biggie, just find it interesting.

From what I gather, it's terrible at night in just about every rural area.
I live in Texas and in a "smaller town" with just one phone/cable company.
My speeds are horrendous at night. Have been for very long time. |

I'm in Rensselaer, IN about 1 block from the Court House.
I pay for 10Mbps service up here.
Tested my speed with speedtest.net at 8:12pm and got the following:
Ping = 523ms
Download = 2.61Mbps
Upload = 0.79Mbps |

| You know if they could guaranty me the dl speeds im paying for and actually give it to me 24/7/365 i would pay double, but they cant even do that. Its not even a matter of money anymore because their infrastructure is so underdeveloped.
What gets me is that they keep on selling and selling and selling and selling and selling the service. With each new person they get my internet gets worse and worse and worse ect...
There is no magic number they have to reach before someone says ok you have met your quota we can not handle anymore people and keep the quality of our service at a high level. CTL will never tell you im sorry but the area you live in is to saturated we can not provide you with quality service. If CTL was any other company that provided a product they would have to meet certain standards, but sadly CTL's standards are weakly regulated. They will send out a tech to check you lines do tests and bend over backwards for you in the day time, but come evening time try and get a service tech to come out to your house and see the REAL reason why your complaining. So what do you do? ok you wait till day time call them up complain they check you lines send out a tech and say nothings wrong and stare at you like you were lying to them. Now what do you do? you wait till night time talk to a tech online they do some tests then tell you that they cant do anymore that a service tech will have to come out to your house. So you say ok send one out, they say ok he will be there in the morning (which is day time) (which is the time you have no problems) (which is the ONLY time they can send techs out) So now here you are AGAIN you and the tech standing outside staring at a meter and it says every things ok, then the tech stares at you like you were lying.
This pisses me off till no end. CTL knows damn well its all on their side in the evening but refuses to fix the problem. All they do is keep selling making more money and not fix the problems they already have. Its like putting a bandaid on a crack in a dam, soon the dams going to burst CTL will walk away and let some other company pick up the pieces. |

Well after 4 months of good service, my evening connection has devolved to less than 1/6 the speeds I should be getting. 6 meg connection and I'm lucky to get a meg in the evening. It's apparent that with a situation like this that it's a clogged network issue.
And here I thought I finally had broadband service that's better then Hughesnet in the evening. Pretty sad when a DSL connection is slower than satellite during prime time. |

Those speeds are typical for this time of the night for me. and I have two downloads going.
