The Via train on that route can get up to 100+ kph on that route, probably by the time it reached the crash point, I'd say it would be doing at least 50-60 kph. Considering momentum and weight of a train that size, the damage we see is what would be expected.

Those VIA passenger trains accelerate much much faster than freight trains and get underway at full speed pretty quickly once they clear the station. The section from Aldershot to Union is rated for 120KM/h or thereabouts, the fastest leg of the Corridor/Maple Leaf run from Niagara Falls to Union. If they weren't yet going 120, they'd be going pretty close to it.
