 | Took the plunge - Distributel cable install date set So I was on TekSavvy for quite a while and happy but left them when the speeds in K/W became terrible.
I have been on Rogers for about 5 months now and as much as I love the speed I am not impressed with the $120 monthly charge as well as the 250GB cap.
Took the plunge and signed up for Distributel and have an install date set for March 7th. I gave them an address with "Basement apartment" added so I can get them signed up as well as keep my Rogers account. If Distributel primetime speeds aren't sufficient and I have to listen to the kids / better half whine about netflix always buffering then I'll just drop them within the first month and chalk the $40 install fee up to a learning lesson.
Crossing fingers the speed is good. $62 unlimited is a lot better than $120 250GB if the primetime speed is sufficient.

The speeds during primetime should be the same as Rogers at the same tier using the DCM475 modem. I have the 24/1 plan on Distributel and I get peaks over 51mbps during off peak times using SpeedTest.net and a solid 24mbps continuous (I have DUMeter to monitor my connection too). During evening hours my peaks drop to about 30-40mbps with continuous at 22-24mbps. I'm in a relatively good area though, but I have noticed a bit lower speeds the last few weeks as I'm guessing more customers have come online. |

 | reply to darryldale I'm also getting cable internet from Distributel. Install date March 1st! I can't wait. Only getting the 12Mb/512Kbps package as they say its the only one available in my area. From the sounds of it, it also seems that I might not even get 12Mb but only 10Mb!? I donno. I hope to get the full speed I paid for. This isn't dsl.
I have an overlap of just about a week to 10 days before I have to cancel my dsl from Teksavvy.
Heres to us and anyone else! Good luck and wish you a smooth transition! |

Heres to us and anyone else! Good luck and wish you a smooth transition! Wait, it says you are in Windsor, so that's Cogeco that provides cable in the area? -- No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake....... |

 | Cogeco indeed services this area. |

 | reply to darryldale Does anyone have any idea if Distributel has their own lines or not?
I just saw that they have unlimited in Montreal. I can finally ditch Primus (which isn't bad, but slow!) and get some faster internet for a decent price!
I'm gonna call them tomorrow. But I'm wondering if this unlimited bandwidth will last. I use on average 200-300GB and I've gone as high as 710GB in the past. No caps can hold me!
If they don't have their own lines, they must be buying from Videotron over here. And they've never resold their lines unlimited... |

 | reply to darryldale I'm happy to report.. my cable install went smoothly! Woot! speeds above 12Mb/512Kb.

 | reply to darryldale Well cable modem showed up today about a week before my scheduled install date (scheduled for the 7th).
I also received a phone call from Distributel yesterday to confirm my install date as well as to let me know my modem was shipped and I should be receiving it today.
On the phone he also verified the phone number that was provided to Rogers and to let me know it was very important that I make sure I answer when the Rogers tech calls or they won't bother coming over for the install.
So far impressed with how smoothly things are going.
Crossing fingers that the install goes smoothly on Wednesday and that my primetime speeds stay reasonable.
Not looking forward to having to pay about $140 to Rogers to cancel my service 7 months early though :-(
Since Distributel is about 50 a month cheaper though it's less than a 3 month payback.

 | I've noticed during peek times, my speeds go down to 8Mb ish for downloads. Just checked for speeds now and what I got is below.

And yes, last time I asked them what the highest available was, she had said 12Mb/512Kb. It was the only speed they could offer. Nothing below. Which is weird. Hopefully we'll see some speed boosts in the future. |

 | reply to darryldale Well first day on Distributel and have ZERO complaints.
1) Called for installation and had zero issues. 2) They called back to confirm I received modem and to confirm the date of install - Excellent 3) Guy showed up to install Modem exactly when he was supposed to and was out of here in less than 5 minutes - Excellent 4) It's now 9PM and I am watching the Daily Show on Hulu as well as downloading something with SabNZBD that is floating around 3.7MBps - Again Excellent
This experience has been head and shoulders above anything I ever experienced with TekSavvy.
I'll give it a week to make sure things look good and then will call to cancel Rogers.

Hopefully we'll see some speed boosts in the future. The Cogeco non-aggregate DOCSIS 2.0 TPIA profile is 14/1, so you're maxing out at exactly what you should be getting. DOCSIS 3.0 is 20/1.5 but only on the aggregate POI. |

 | reply to darryldale I am in Cambridge as well and have been waiting for Teksavvy to come back, but after reading all the bad hype for the past week or so I am thinking they might not be such a good idea if they even do come back. I just looked into Distributel today and so far am liking what I am reading about them. I currently have Rogers Express with no contract left, I'm just iffy about switching for fear of downtime(I have no cable tv). After reading this post I am feeling a bit better and just have to decide which pkg to go for |

 | You'll have no problems signing up for both if you tweak the address you give Distributel.
I simply added "basement apartment" onto my house address.
When the installer got here I just flat out told him that there is no basement apartment and that all we had to do was unplug the rogers modem and plug the distributel one in.
I made sure he put a great bag tag on the box on the side of the house that I'm a TPIA customer and NOT to disconnect my service without knocking on my door first. When I cancel my Rogers service they will send somebody around to disconnect me but I work from home so have a good chance of catching him if he does disconnect the line (even with the tag). |

 | Thats a great idea getting the guy to put a sign on there. Wonder if Rogers will honor that. Hope so. I'll have to remember that next time I'm switching providers if ever needed.
I had a "slight" issue with my install, but nothing major. I wanted the installer to put a new hole into the wall for the cable to go through but as I thought he would need written notice from landlord giving permission. That was alright though as the cable we chose was the Bell Satellite dish/service cable which I barely watch. I can later just go into the basement and add a cable to that back to my apartment. He was in and out within say 15 minutes. Very quick install. No new cables needed. All he had to do was figure out the rats nest of cable collection downstairs. (Bell/Cogeco cables) lol. Good thing he had one of those signal/tracer things. |
