Re: Amazing what you can find on eBay

In fact, I think I will inform the seller (since I've found nothing that warrants further action), and give them a heads up about selling drives in the future.

It'll be even funnier if the data isn't the sellers

Of course this is from someone that

* shreds documents with any identifiable information on it.

* uses a strong magnet on the magstripe of old CC's etc then cuts them into small pieces.

Lol...yeah, good point. It's entirely possible that's true.
Some of these sellers just accumulate junk like this, and don't even bother to check them out before they put them up for sale....just to make a buck.
Speaking of making a buck, can't wait to use some of these banking account numbers.
LOL! PLEASE don't take me seriously... I'm just kidding, ya know?

My original advice still stands and with good reason. Doing the right thing doesn't always net good results. If you think courts have not ruled on data liability issues, you are sorely mistaken.

Dban and move on.

Hah, I send credit cards through the shredder twice (second time in an envelope since they are bits) and dispose of them in different trash cans. Some of it goes out to the curb one week and the rest another week. No real schedule, just whenever I realize "hey I still need to throw this out".

Well you're not paranoid when they really are out to get you

PS: Good idea. Thanks for the tip.

and just to clarify, the envelopes are not ones that I paid for. Bill & credit card offer envelopes work great for holding smaller things to shred. I keep a stack of them at my desk for a variety of purposes - quick notes, shredding fodder, etc.

Ohh, I forgot one

* I scratch (badly) and/or melt data CD/DVD's before I discard them.

my shredder has a cd/dvd spot. Can't do much with quarter inch disc diamonds last I checked.

love mine, it is used almost every day. My daughter loves to help shred stuff too though I need to make sure she doesn't grab random things that need not be shredded. I got it for christmas two years ago and it's taken a lickin'.

This seems rather excessive...
Any quality cross cut shredder (Level 3 or 4) would do the job destroying any sensitive data without having to separate waste into different trash bags.

When I have bad hard drives I open the top I put a torch to it until it glows I may smash the platter so it bends or throw ice water on the glowing platter then smash it so it shatters.

20 secs in a microwave totally disables them. The metallic layer gets broken up into a spiderweb network of burnt lines.

Doesn't seem to hurt the microwave either.

Shred those CD/DVD's. There are shredders (I have one) that will do this nicely.
