tape under the ******* wirenut

I have to vent. Has anyone here ever seen electrical tape UNDER a wire nut? Yesterday, I was helping a friend do some electrical work in a new house he bought. The romex was twisted together in the box, then wrapped in electrical tape, then a wirenut over the electrical tape, then more electrical tape to hold the wirenut onto the splice? Is there a handyman on planet earth dumb enough to do this? I dont have pictures, sorry.

Would tend to defeat the purpose of a wire nut

I guess that's how you do it when the wirenut just too big for the size of the wires you have! The table under it makes it fit better!

I have seen splices with just electical tape and no wire nuts, and wire nuts with electrical tape over them, but wire nuts with electrical tape underneath are a new one.

Yes. The are no bounds on stupidity.

I thought I have seen a lot, but that takes the cake, what kind of a duffer would tape the conductors before applying the wirenut...

Strange one. Maybe the tape was alraedy there and someone threw on the wirenut to "fix it"?

These newbies don't know or realize what was standard prior to the lazy connectors known as wirenuts. Perhaps the person who put the tape on the connection under the wirenut was taught how to properly make a connection that would never come loose. Of course working on the circuit later was a PITA.

I worked once in a nylon factory that was built by Union labor in 1954. Every connection in the entire plant was soldered and taped with friction tape. The connection in the picture would be taped.

You can also bet the Space Shuttle didn't have wirenuts on it's electrical connections because they will come loose with vibration.

And I laugh when I see wirenuts then tape.

this is a new one to me. must be some kind of new listed method of using wire nuts?

They probably use a Marr connector, basically a wirenut with a screw that keeps the wires in place.

Used plenty of them. The cover also screws onto the brass insert. Very good product but superseded by the cheaper wire-nut.

In fact I have a few of them in my drawer.

That plant was wired with solid wire so the connections to the panel terminal strips had a brass cup that the loop on the wire would lay in and a brass top with the screw going through all three. For the life of me I cannot remember the name of those. Anyone ever see them?

Lazy??? Yeah, and cars used to start with hand cranks too. LOL

Thankfully were beyond those caveman days.

The fact that you are comparing splices made in building wiring and those in the space shuttle leaves one speechless.

I promise the shuttle or any other space vehicle does not have wire nuts. i have the document from nasa to prove it.

I wasn't looking for one. I was merely stating an opinion, same as you.

Ideal still makes them. I love them. Vibration proof, doesn't mangle ancient wire leading to the wire cracking from repeated retermination. Always removable. Very little guessing whether its the right size of the wire combination too. Can never slip off.

Wirenuts are illegal in Europe. Screws terminals, polaris blocks, or wagos. With the push on wagos, i personally think they are as or more dangerous than wirenuts, but general purpose euro circuits are breakered much lower than US circuits, yet the same wagos are used in both places. If your going to have wirenuts, atleast require them to be porcelain in my opinion (but porcelains dont have the internal coil...).

If you want space shuttle grade wiring, first, all screw terminals are ring crimp connectors.

Personally, I insist that each connection be exothermically welded together then taped with friction tape. The wire must then be stripped back and have a Western Union jumper braised around the exothermic connection (just in case). This too is taped with friction tape. The two splices are then covered in flame retardant muslin. I wrap that assembly with fiberglass splicing tape. I then wrap the entire assembly in foil tape.
Once in the foil, I place a heat shrink over the entire splice. Then cove the heat shrink with 6-1/2 layers of the most expensive 3M tape I can find.

My God. Sometimes I wonder about the sanity of some of you people. There's nothing wrong with wing nuts.

To the OP, that's a new one on me. My saying is, "If you have to use tape, you've done something wrong."
