G5 is very similar to the MX518 but only has 1 thumb button I believe and the MX518 has two thumb buttons. Most of your current games will allow you to map M4 and M5, so that would be the benefit of the MX518.

You are correct i've had the G5 for 5 years with zero problems it also has weights so you can adjust the balance of the mouse to your hand and strenght.
