 | [Northeast] strange 17 and 22 second drops of both phone and int I've posted this issue in the Verizon Direct forum and have been interacting with a Vz staff member, but I'm also going to post here in case others have seen this problem and have suggestions.
Multiple times a day I'm simultaneously losing phone and internet for several seconds and it seems to follow a pattern (times are GMT and change from day to day):
14:57:25 - down 14:57:27 - up
15 seconds later
14:57:42 - down 14:57:43 - up
21 seconds later
14:58:04 - down 14:58:06 - up
When I look at logs from previous instances they follow a similar, almost predictable pattern - 17 seconds from the first outage to the second, 22/23 seconds from the second to the third.
No relationship I can find to internet upload/download activity. It seems to happen in the morning US Eastern between 9am and 11am, one or more times a day for this "cycle". It ALWAYS seems to be 3 times.
I'm on an ONT 611 (in service for around 5-1/2 years, never a problem). Recently replaced backup battery, no impact. Power supply is plugged into a UPS with good battery. ONT is Cat5 to my router.
Tech came out, verified the ONT is fine, couldn't find any other faults.
Not using an Actiontec router, but this can't be the cause because I also lose phone service. Current router is a Zyxel USG 20.
Thoughts anyone? I've been thrilled with FiOS service for many years but may have to switch back to Cablevision, and demand my phone line go back to copper (still have it) if this can't get fixed. |

 | Re: [Northeast] strange 17 and 22 second drops of both phone and If you're loosing both, I would think it'd have to be the ONT. We kept having an issue with the internet going out and not coming back until I forcefully power-cycled the ONT. Verizon swore for months the ONT was fine. I finally MADE them replace it anyway, it's been fine since. |
|
 | Thanks, it's either that or something at the CO like a PON card. It's intermittent and short enough that my neighbors may not be really seeing it (those on FiOS). I'll monitor for a bit longer and see about getting the ONT changed. |
|
 | Strange - I just had a week with absolutely zero drops, and after a lot of rain now I'm getting a ton of them in the space of an hour.
Time to log another request to get the ONT changed. |

It could be a fiber connection such as in the Fiber Distribution Hub. The FDH connections are "supposed" to be water tight, but that is not always the case. -- There are 10 kinds of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who don't.

 | Thanks, this seems logical as well. The network group is looking into this now. What's strange is the sequence - it's ALWAYS a drop of 1-2 seconds followed by 15 seconds of uptime, followed by another drop of 1-2 seconds followed by 20 seconds of uptime.
After a week with zero downtime it's strange to now have it happening 20 times in a couple of hours. |
|
 | And if this doesn't get resolved shortly I will definitely insist on getting my phone back on copper, as well as lodge a complaint with the NY PSC. |

 | Tech came yesterday (best I've dealt with yet) and did some diagnosis and then replaced the ONT. He was surprised given the age of the existing 611 unit that the last tech didn't replace it when he was here.
Too early to tell if this fixes the problem but so far so good. It was nice to be dealing with a professional who takes pride in his work too! |

 | reply to MarkLuke Are you aerial if so you could have a squirrel chew in the fiber in the air and now water has gotten in the connection if it gets cold it will crystallize ice up and you will lose the signal until it thaws if this is the case your neighbors on the same fiber terminal will be having similar issues |
|
 | Interesting idea - don't think there was any specific correlation between cold and outages but will note for the future. In any case so far it's been solid for 96 hours, hope it holds. |
