I've been working with Apple engineers since 10.7.0

There is a lolnormous thread on the Apple forums about this with no official reply.

The solution has been to deploy a third-party binding solution, which I don't want to do.

There is an answer. I found it after some work.

I got my Macbook air working with my companies AD which is hosted on MS Server 2k8 in a .local domain. I did it by turning off DNS multicasting.

I suggest checking out the website
hhttp://www.macwindows.com/TIP-Lion-dot-local-AD-disable-multicast.html

You also have to make sure you configure your Directory utility properly you can tell when you have it setup right when you go to the Directory Editor and it pulls up all your domains AD names.

Reader confirms that disabling multicast fixes Lion AD issue

Tuesday, January 24, 2012

Keith Adams confirmed at tip that suggests you can fix Lion problems with .local Active Directory domains by disabling DNS multicast:

Our issue was resolved by disabling MultiDNS broadcast. This tip worked like a champ for us! I had been struggling with the issue since 10.7 came out. Now this fix has resolved the issue of not being able to login as network users on 10.7 machines. We could always bind but not use network accounts. THANKS!!! We were running 10.7.2 on workstations and WS 2008 r2 on the DC. One odd thing was that when I did an upgrade install from snow leopard to Lion when it first came out everything worked fine for existing network accounts but new accounts could not be added.

Holy crap that actually worked.

How long has it been working for you? So does Lion suck less for you now?

I rebooted twice, it took 20 to 30 seconds to login, but it worked each time.

Lion is still garbage. It should work out of the box.

Is the issue that your AD domain is .local? I thought that was always frowned upon when dealing with OS X in AD because it tries to use .local for mDNS functions.

It's not a .local
I was confused about that why that change appears to be working, but I'm not asking questions.

It's at the point where I'm waiting to see if it breaks next week.

If you want your shares to work properly you will need to disable IPV6.

Change this command
sudo vi /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

to

sudo nano /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

And do all the changes in terminal and make it easy.

After it's done just reboot and login.

Make sure your DNS address is properly listed in the network settings for both WIFI and ethernet.

I installed messenger beta, rebooted, bastard won't log in again so I'm in log in hell.

I want my computer to work 30% of the time so I'm not going to install 10.8 right now.

Shit.

Wow that sucks, mine let me log in after I installed the beta of Messages but it did take a little bit longer.
