[PHONE] cox reliabilty concern

Cox is providing me with bill credits because I threatened to leave for my cell phone cant pay to phone bills at once. This last year I was stuck without phone service because all the nodes and the line extenders had no power and no back up system in place. Because of that I don't want to go threw that again. Has this happened to any one on here before. I talked to cox tech 1 about the issue. It seems to me that cox does not want to install some sort of back up power for their equipment. I had power the whole time and still no service. All I can say is I do not and will not go threw that ordeal again. The way I see it my cell phone is more reliable than cox phone.

Just to clarify, all of our equipment does indeed have backup power capability whether that be by battery backup or generator, which ever is most practical in the given situation.

It's all batteries here as you can see. when the batteries are dead no phone. That's what happened to me last year I would like to see a better solution not just a 8 hour battery. This power supply had no power for 2 weeks therefore I had no phone for 2 weeks. The PSU powers the line extender.

Well I don't know the exact requirements regarding this, but this has been the setup they have used for a while now in the markets they provide service to. Personally I see no problem with this, and you should always have a backup cell phone or such just for this reason. So what happen to cause a loss of power for 2 weeks? Bad storm come threw?

most telecommunications equipment is powered this way....with the typical exception of the central office equipment which is powered by generators as the cable head-ends are

Unfortunately for modern phone systems this is one strength that common battery phone systems have...they are powered by the batteries in the central office which have generator redundancy...you didn't have edge devices like line extenders, nodes, VRADs, etc that need to be powered as well.

With modern services like DSL, Uverse, FIOS, Cable, etc. the networks were designed to be generally available during a power outage but would take extra measures to sustain them following a larger scale disaster that might take power out for extended periods of time.

It's very, very expensive to put generators out everywhere and it would definitely drive the cost of our service up if it was required for those few times when the power goes out for something like two weeks.

80 MPH winds came threw blew down 50 power power poles on the other side of town. My power stayed up because I am on a different circuit than the PSU is on.

Gotcha well that sucks, and was just an unfortunate situation. I remember a little while back when we had a weaken hurricane come threw, we were one of the lucky ones to have power threw out the storm. But after the storm was gone, we lost internet/phone service. Luckily it only last about 24 hours. I am guessing the main cox equipment lost power, which I know area's around us lost power but we had power still. So it was one of them things where you can't control where the main cox equipment is that needs power. Yes there is always better ways things could be done, but like bbeesley See Profile said that cost would be on cox, and you know what that would mean for its customers. It's just one of those things that sucks when it happens.

Ice storms do it too. Dec 2007 my power (and internet/Cox phone) was out for 10 days. But guess what? Most of the AT&T POTS lines were also out.

We had a big storm back in August and Cox put out mobile generators in the hardest hit areas... and what happened? Scumbags stole said generators: »news.providencejournal.com/break···ng-c.htm

Generators powering Cox phone, Net are stolen
August 31, 2011 4:56 pm

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A few of the industrial-size generators used by Cox Communications to restore Internet and telephone service after Hurricane Irene have been stolen or disabled.

The communications company had set up about 300 generators throughout Rhode Island to restore critical Internet and phone service in communities hit hardest by the power outages, said Cox spokeswoman Amy Quinn.

But in the middle of the night Tuesday, two generators were stolen, and someone attempted to shut off two others, all in Lincoln and South Kingstown, Quinn said. The state police are now investigating, she said.

The technicians monitoring the service noticed that one of the generators had suddenly lost power, Quinn said. When they inspected the area, they realized the generator had disappeared.

Their loss means that customers can't access the Internet or make phone calls, including 911 calls, Quinn said.

It's a violation of federal law to disable, tamper or remove generators connected to broadband and communication networks, the attorney general's office stated Wednesday.

Where the generators have gone is the subject of the state police investigation. At this stage, Quinn noted, there aren't any generators to be found at local hardware stores.

If there was no RF (Line was cut before this Power Supply) signal then that would be a reason why Cox would not put any generators...
This sounds like what the problem was since so many Poles were down.

Here if power is down for extended times Generators are deployed... I have seen it here.

it was on the other side of town served by a different node and equipment.

Cable usually follows power, So I still bet the down poles were the problem if it also knocked out power there.

As as it was mentioned earlier, if the lines are down to the point that they're inoperable restoring power won't help anything. Each disaster we respond to presents its own unique set of challenges.

I honestly don't know anyone with a house phone anymore. Cell phones seem to be the only things that work during hurricanes here. Lots of people learned that in 2005 and 2008 around here.

Cell service was the first to go during our last two hurricanes. We had no power for several days, cell service was up and down but our land line telephone continued to work the entire time.

[PHONE] cox reliabilty concern

Hi CoxTech1,

In Connecticut, we had the two big power outages this past fall - 3 days and 7 days. It appears the Cox pole mounted fiber to copper boxes are not battery backed or more likely, they had dead batteries. With both outages, I lost dial tone the second power went out. My in-house Cox batteries were fine and I was using an un-powered phone. Dial tone reappeared several days later when I heard the generator start that was powering the Cox box on the pole. Shouldn't we have at least 12 hours of backup?

I'm not sure about times but I want to say closer to 8hrs is expected. In either case the equipment should alarm AC failure indicating to our maintenance team that the equipment requires attention.

All depends on the area I guess. Lots of trees around here mean telephone lines are down on the ground with the trees, powerlines, telephone lines, and cable lines. Cell was the only thing working for us. Landline was down for 3 weeks..and when it came back it never worked right so it was cancelled as we got tired of fighting.
