| [MCE] XP reinstall Question In another thread, I've realized that 'NetBios Over TCP/IP' is missing from my Device Manager. I've googled and read about ways to fix it. I've tried several. At this point I think a re-install of the OS is what I need. I was hoping it would be a simple action like refreshing a driver or dll file, but it's not.
I'm running XP Media Center Edition with SP3. I have the SP2 OS on CD from Microsoft. I've never reinstalled an OS. I've reinstalled many, many apps, but never an OS.
My question is, what will I lose/overwrite if/when I reinstall the OS? Will i lose all apps and data? Will the OS simply refresh and update and OS-based files.
Thank you |

 | Does Windows still use NetBios?
When you reinstall the OS, you lose absolutely everything. Unless you select "Repair". |

 | It must, or at least the DHCP service wants it to be there. That is the problem i am rally trying to solve. I am trying to get my DHCP service working again and the cause is that NetBios over TCP/IP is not there/working |

Are you saying that if you go into the properties of your network card and go to the advanced window and click on the WINS tab that NetBIOS is disabled? Have you looked there?
And yes; if you do a clean install of the OS everything that is there will be lost. Data, programs, settings everything. If you choose repair then no, as Howard stated. |

| It is/was a NetBios problem (other thread/investigation confirmed it).
I solved the 'reinstall issue' by doing the following: 1. I have a laptop running XP. I copied the NetBT sys file and put in to Windows/System32/drivers 2. I exported registry key from laptop and imported to Desktop having problems. 3. Problem solved.
BTW - when I popped in the XPSP2 CD, i didn;t see a repair option. |

By default Windows set this option to Auto which in my experience does not always work. So I manually set to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on all my computers. -- Shooter Ready--Stand By BEEP ******** |
