WX Station and Live Cam in Oceanside, OR

Been up about a month now:

»zardoz-sensor.com/

It is 'at' Clifftop, but it is my machine. The system is linked back to my residence by microwave for injection into the Internet.

Photos to follow..

It's actually a motel. The manager has a long-time interest in wx and is also a ham, so we chat (there are only 34 people that live here on a regular basis).

I live about 900 feet from that property. The first pic is one from my house towards the Clifftop Inn. I was testing and burning in the cam when I shot that.

The others are sunsets from my place. The objective is to move towards HD cams and more views of the surrounding area from Clifftop.

It is a great place for people from Portland to come over and enjoy the storms. We get high wind events on a regular basis...along with the power outages that seem to accompany them.

Beautiful. I've not yet made it to the left coast - made it as far as Montana then turned around.

Oceanside? Isn't that where the some of the homes were sliding down the hillside a few years back and they were requesting government funding for repairs/solutions? Whatever happened there?

BTW, nice pics and your livecam seems to show the same sort of weather I'm looking at just a bit north of you!

You must be referring to The Capes development. The hill sides were stabilized by drilling in stabilization anchors and then planting of native grasses to check the erosion.

I do believe that was a private, not public, solution to the problem.

What model camera are you using? How weather proof is it?

Edit: Never mind. Just drilled in further and found it.

I am using this camera:

What I have is a re-branded version by Sharx Security.

It is very well constructed, is designed for indoor or outdoor use, and is weatherproof to IP66 standards.

The one thing I don't particularly like about this camera is the connectorization. I will take a photo of that when I am over at the site. It's not bad, but it could be done different. More to follow later.

It runs local here for me on the intranet, but can "put the hurt" on your d/l cap if you view the live cam at full frame rate and bitrate over the internet. I keep it turned down to 5 FPS and 1 Mbps, which is fine for the scene it is viewing. The Zardoz webpage itself refreshes every 5 seconds.

I'll probably work on getting it outside this next spring, or maybe do the HD version. Just ran out of time this winter...

Rainy day window, eh?
The connectors...

The RJ45 is fine, and the power and audio out, but the green inline for the burglar alarm connection is annoying. It requires a large connector to pass through into an enclosure.

But, uuuh...OK then!

It is what it is, and I have a way around that particular issue.

It would have been nice to have choice of options such as RJ45 only...so on and so forth.

The next indoor project is to make a black lens shade to control the reflections off the glass back into the cam. Cheap black foam board and tape will do the trick.

Done.

Improved the pic considerably. The "rainbow flares" in the AM will now go away, but this fix was not intended to solve that issue.

1 edit

Likin' your live-cam pics today.

I see from my weather program that both OR and WA have high surf advisories currently and that's evident from your pics.

I've been down in your area quite a bit over the last 20 years or so 'cuz Cape Lookout SP is a favorite spot of mine.

BTW, I saw that Westport, WA (where my sis and bro-in-law live) was having snow flurries today. That's a bit unusual for a coastal community, especially mid-March!

Edit: Talked to the sister this morning (3/13) from where they're currently working for the crabbing industry out of Coos Bay. She said they had about 6 inches of pretty dry snow on the ground there after a big wind event yesterday. I see there's lots of major road problems throughout OR due to the weather.

Had a problem with the humidistat/temp sensor/transmitter...

It keeps on getting flooded with the wind-borne rain. The rain in that location is horizontal and up, rather than down in particular.

The station (the exterior elements) was not reporting, which was determined to be caused by flooding. Curiously, after a day or so of good weather, the sensor/transmitter would start working again.

Working is a relative term, as it was reporting temps of +350 F. and -40 F., which was certainly not the case.

A new sensor/transmitter was ordered ($38 delivered) and will be installed in the new housing, pictured above.

The direction of the wind is relatively constant, that is, from the west, plus or minus (a lot), and the objective is to isolate the sensor/transmitter physically from the rain, while having good airflow through the housing.

The blue plastic mesh is from a kitchen pan scrubber. I just cut it apart...it turned out to be a tube. Its function is to provide a low-impedance mesh to the airflow while providing a physical surface for the raindrops to land upon. It also keeps the birds out (they think it is a house).

I am looking for a small 12v fan to ventilate the housing, but those are hard to come by at a reasonable price. The search continues, however.

Hmmm....have you tried Harbor Freight? I know most of their products come from Asia but the prices are pretty good.
