Thanks for all of the suggestions. I think I have enough to go forward and I'll post back with results. It's a slow process for me, so if anyone is interested, it may take a bit.

I'm getting pretty good results. But I wonder in terms of maximizing performance if there's something better I can do. I will probably get rid of the G network since I only have a laptop and an older nook that uses it. I'll buy a small N adapter and just use USB for the nook.

If you're going to get a N adapter then try and get one that uses the same schema as your ASUS N Router -- ASUS are not know for their wireless network adapters so once you find out whose schema they use get one that matches that -- should be cheap. Which schema? Beamforming or Spatial Multiplexing or some combination of both

How much more performance do you want?

Great! Thanks. I'm going to have to do a bit of research then.

More performance in the sense that does the map look okay or would I better off choosing different channels? Maybe once I get rid of my G setup to go 40MHz on both N routers and select channel 1 on the first and 11 on the second?

Well your map looks good but your not getting the performance that your ASUS N Routers are capable of delivering because your clients are not capable. You can try other channels and see what happens --- but only 1,6,11 for the 2.4Ghz band.

Yes, if you got rid of the G and went with 40Mhz your performance should improve --- by how much all depends on your N Clients capability.

I'm not sure you can split the 40mhz channels like that.

They have to be 'contigious', such as a primary channel 1 would have the secondary channel of 5 and the 40mhz center at channel 3 due to the channel spacing. At the other end a channel 11 primary would have a secondary channel 7 and 40mhz center on channel 9.

Or are you planning to use ch 1 on one router and ch 11 on the other?

Yes, the latter. Sorry, I should have been clearer. I initially had them on 40Mhz on channels and 11, but I was getting "severe" interference. The way I have them now, interference is "acceptable".

It's also the way I read it. I should have given you more credit....

You've still got a bit of overlap btwn the two. Is there one that's loaded more to use 40mhz and configure the other to use 20mhz or both pretty much balanced bandwidth wise? Until you go 5ghz of course.

Otherwise sounds like you're a happy camper (for a while).

1 edit

I have only a single piece of equipment that can do 5GHz. Actually, it's my son's Galaxy Tab, so I don't care too much.

I plan on getting rid of the G network in the next day or so, so I'll only have the N routers active. I'm also thinking about getting an N router for the basement, but I'm going to hold off to see how strong the signal is in the basement from the existing one on the main level.

The snapshot in my message shows G routers on tha main level where I was sitting from about 5 feet away, from upstairs and the basement.

The N routers are upstairs and on the main level (near the G router). I depowered the upstairs one a little, but I think I could do some more. Both are on 20MHz since I couldn't figure out which one gets more use. Probably pretty even. During the day there's more usage on the main level and then after about 8:00 p.m. the balance shifts.

I'm pretty happy as things stand now I guess.
