Re: California and Vampires

I kind of wish they built "intelligent" power strips and chargers. That once it senses it's not being used it can shut itself off/go to a sleep type mode.

I gave been hearing on the news of late that we are using more power today, then ever before.
Think about it.
The average PC user leaves their PC on 24/7 with their monitor in "sleep" mode.
The plasam/LCD TVs er all love and have, use juice even when off. Even if you hit the power switch. That is so they have an "insta-on" look, instead of the consumer waiting a few moments to a minute for the TV to boot up.
Our smart phones, tablets drink up the juice as well. Then add in the game systems, that either are on or in a sleep type mode.
Add in routers, DSL/cable modems, and we are talking about eating a lot of juice.

IMO, we need more efficient, more powerful electric plants. Coal, natural gas, hydro, wind turbines, solar plants wont be able to meet the demand that will be placed on the grid.
We have all electric cars just hitting the streets [Not counting the Volt as it is being recalled], which will also add a demand.

We need nuke plants. They are "cleaner" then coal plants [as their only waste is radioactive material, and that can be recycled some what], and they can produce more electricity efficiently, then coal.
Sadly, after Japan's nuke melt down and the grip the tree huggers have, I strongly doubt we'll see another nuke plant go online in the USA. The tree huggers aren't even happy with the wind turbines, because of the birds that get killed flying into the blades.
People also need to remember that the Nuke plants in Japan were never built to withstand what hit them. Because at the time, no one though tat what happened was possible.

Actually they do. I just recently came across power strips at our local Fry's Electronic store that have a master outlet where power consumption is monitored. If power level on the master outlet drops to a level that indicates the device is off (e.g.: computer) it automatically turns off power on the slave sockets (e.g.: monitor, printer, scanner, modem).

These power strips have been around for decades.

The $30 device would need to save a lot of electricity to be ultimately worth it. It is obvious that it uses power itself - so it cuts SOME consumption for periods of time while adding new consumption all the time. How much while outlets are active? How much while outlets are disabled?
