[Connectivity] what is unicast maintenance ranging

I have a 3 month old Motorola Surfboard Extreme SBG6580 modem. I bought it new when I went from Verizon DSL to Cable internet.

I have an intermittent problem. There seems to be a synch issue and when it is happening I see this message unicast maintenance ranging (plus more messages).

Sometimes it happens every day in the late afternoon and then it doesn't happen for weeks. Sometimes it happens at other times in the day.

It usually syncs within quick order but sometimes I need to unplug it and there have been a few occasions that I had to call Comcast and have them send a refresh signal.

Any ideas?

In your next post, please include the information requested in the link:

»Comcast High Speed Internet FAQ »How To Get Help!

This will enable this forum's techies to perhaps help understand the problem. You should be able to access your modem's signals using »192.168.100.1 Look in your modem's manual if this doesn't work to find the URL for your modem.

I had a similar problem a couple of months ago. The CC tech discovered that the buried cable was defective. Replacement of the cable solved the problem. Other causes of the problems you're seeing could be corroded/lose connectors or something wrong at CC's plant. If you have a brand new installation of a new cable and household wiring, you shouldn't have wiring problems, but who knows.

I have all new coaxial cable coming into the house, a dedicated cable from the outside box to the modem.

As previously described it is intermittent, normally late afternoon but can occur other times.

My State is Pennsylvania
I have a D-Link router
Avast anti virus
Can't remember my exact tier around 3000/10000 I think.
Power - SNR - 7.3 dBmV 39.9 dB
Firmware - SBG6580-3.1.0.0-GA-07-180-NOSH

IF this is like Verizons intermittent problems, the company will never, ever admit that it is in the company office. My neighbors have all left Verizon DSL because of the intermittent issue. Yep ... they won't maintain the old copper.

Our cable wires are not buried wires, they are still the ones that hang from pole to pole.

can you post a screen shot of the signal stats page? I can't tell from your posts if that's + or - 7.3 and you didn't post the upstream power level.

Your upstream is barely in spec for D3 for how hot your downstream signal is. Do you have an amp anywhere in line? If not you may be off a high value tap and need a tech to come out, evaluate losses to check they match what they should be off the tap, and adjust as necessary. Signal fluctuates (can't avoid it), you may be going out of spec and causing the modem to loose its connection.

The direct line from the box to my modem is 25>30 feet. Just last month they installed new cable and connector from the box to the modem. I need an AMP for that length?

No, I didn't say you need an amp, I asked if you had one installed. This is a problem a tech will need to fix outside the home most likely.

I agree. Now to get them to do it is another thing.

I posted the above not so much as to get help, but as a comparison to urdrwho's figures. Maybe we have the same problem? Have had CC techs here but each time they say there is no problem, because of course I have not lost connection while they are here.

I should add that my gateway was purchased on December 5, 2011.

Thanks for the link, but not sure that completely applies to our gateways as they are docsis 3.0? Looked at that earlier and it is for docsis 2.1 unless i read something wrong. I see some of the terminology is fairly similar so I suppose my problem is noise in the line that CC needs to come take care of.

Let me know if I am way off base. Would also like to know how you make out urdrwho.

Your problem is probably the Moto gateway not playing well with Comcast. There have been a lot of reports of the SBG6580 dropping the connection since around the first of the year.

It applies for any modem or system.

Well then, what is the problem? Who isn't playing well with whom?

When I bought this modem there was only one other maker of WiFi Modems at Best Buy.

Call me cynical but is this a "modem doesn't play well" some kind of hard wired method to make us rent from Comcast?

For the first month (maybe two) I had no problems, not one disconnect. I think it was after our northeaster storm that the problem started. I have a friend that does rent from Comcast and he has the same problem. He lives 5 miles away. His fix is to disconnect the modem and re-connect.

In the link, the problem spread across different modems --

"had a motorola 5101 and now have a Ubee D3 modem but this has not solved the issue. "

Upgrading the firmware is an odd arrangement. Apparently Comcast controls when the upgrade happens but bulks at upgrading customer owned modems.

From the Comcast link --

"I got a good answer from Comcast about this. A Comcast employee from the regional office called me Saturday and today. I was told that it was a device problem that might be fixed by the recent firmware. But that the firmware on our devices can't be updated because Comcast has yet to approve the recent firmware. I was told that that's Comcast's problem in part because the SBG6580 is listed as a compatible device and, right now, it's not compatible.

So, I was given three recommendations: return it, bridge it, or deal with it and Comcast might eventually approve the updates. The gentleman I spoke with said that he plans to pursue it farther.

If more people complain, the more likely it is that Comcast will update. I initiated the discussion with the Comcast employee by emailing We_Can_Help@cable.comcast.com with my signal levels, my account number, and my phone number."

gateways suck.

youll hear that time and time again on this or any other forum with decent tech geeks.....

get a seperate modem/router and your FAR better off....

comcast isnt trying to push you to rent....they test these modems as far as the manufacturer has....thus different ratings at »mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/

yours has 1 star....
»mydeviceinfo.comcast.net/certhelp.php

honestly ratings wont go up.....its tested as far as it goes, then released....can firmware fix certain issues...yea...but if the manufacturer wont back up the device (2 or 3 star), then comcast cant do anything....

so no matter how many people complain comcast has nothing to do with motorola and why they made a POS gateway.....

the reason though- to make money....you paid $150 to moto instead of only $75-$100 for a modem then spend $50 on another company to buy a router.....

Another option would be to put it in "bridge" mode and use your own high quality router with it;

I have a router and the reason I went with the Moto was a WiFi issue. You are about right - it wasn't $150 but was about $140 with tax.

Guess I'll just put it in bridge mode. Too bad because I had 1>2 months of perfect service on it.

Gotta give Kudo's to Comcast for a second. I e-mailed their help that was on the Comcast link and 2 hours later I received a phone call from them. They will send a tech and I'll talk with the tech.

Odd that my friend that lives 5 miles away has the same issue. You would think since he is renting a modem that it would be a 3 star modem.

Where did you find a listing of the models and their ratings?
