Re: TSI Marc, Quebec cable announcement, when?

said by ghostly57:

Doesn't Videotron only have one POI (aggregated)?

Videotron has regional POIs (Quebec, Montreal, Gatineau, etc.) and central POIs... so even the least aggregated option is already a lot more aggregated than Rogers' POIs.

Rumor has it that Videotron itself will be changing it's packages soon -- perhaps they're waiting for the Videotron announcement?

Either way, I very much look forward to the new and better packages. Hopefully Teksavvy will act and Videotron will have to react instead...

I don't care much about Videotron anymore. Question of ethics and morals, I do not wish to encourage their way of doing things. I think many think the same way about Bell.

I much prefer to encourage companies like TSI. Now, if they could only announce something for their Quebec cable customers, that wold be nice

ElectronicBox has already published their new Videotron plans and rates on their blog... many substantial price cuts with equally significant cap increases.

Things should get interesting.

Where's that rumor from?

With what eBox has done and other Videotron-TPIA ISPs will likely do in the near future, I doubt Videotron can afford to leave their current plans as-is: while Videotron's subscribers may be wary of switching to a 3rd-party ISP and having to buy a $100 modem to save $5/month with old rates, that may very well change if the savings increase to $20-30/month with nearly twice the caps to boot.

Even people who sold their souls for Videotron's most expensive plans years ago would have a hard time ignoring those deals if Videotron does nothing to keep them.

That's not a rumor, that's a theory.

With the recent 2$ TV increase and 2$ internet increase on January 1st 2012, Vidéotron is going to the same direction as Bhell did 10 years ago: increase prices to the moon, tell the CRTC these are the standard prices, make the CEO a billionaire and keep shareholders happy. Those who think they pay too much must call and take a bundle package that suits their needs.

In reality, wholesale represents only 6% of canadian internet customers. Do they care about TPIA competition? No, they're not a threat since wholesale customers have to buy a 100$ modem, pay 100$ for installation, and pay 100$ for service if there's a problem, which is a turn off for many people who want to switch. Also, they control the price they can charge TPIA, so they'll keep submitting revised price list to the CRTC asking for more until TPIA prices are up to their levels so they won't lose customers.

With old tariffs, 3rd-party prices were close enough to (if not the same as) Videotron's own that Videotron often readily price-matched with free rental modem to boot which makes the switch almost silly in the first place.

With the new rates, the gap between Videotron's current plans and what 3rd-party ISPs can put together in terms of price and caps is a whole lot larger, which makes the $100 modem and potential service charges a whole lot easier to digest. If you have ever tried negotiating caps with Videotron, you would know this is nearly impossible.

Based on the CRTC's past history of denying nearly all other wholesale rate hikes other than UBB/capacity billing, the only way Videotron can make their TPIA clients' rates match Videotron's retail rates any time soon would be to drop their own retail rates.

Innuendo dropped at a Christmas party from someone higher up in Videotron who should know.

Your followup comments may well be true, but I need to point out :

The 6% Indie users stat is about to celebrate its 1st Birthday.

[Cue the Candles, Cake, and Choir ! ]

With the major intake of CABLE customers by TSI and some of the other IISPs, and the generally increased public awareness during last year of the Draconian and Anarchistic CAPs & UBB with which most incumbents continue to screw their OWN retail subscribers, this number is likely several percent LOW.

Shit, look at B$ELL's most recent monthly usage CAP shrinkages and hiked UBB max $$ levels just within the most recent few weeks !

My own gut feeling would be closer to 10% Indie subscribers at end of 2011, though I have no proof.

Please, does anyone have new stats on this ?

Have any incumbents published 2011 EOY income and customer count/churn statements yet ?

I am hoping that the same opportunity will (sooner rather than later) avail itself to ME, after my recent switch to one of Cogeco's upper plans, though my reason for doing so was one of unreliable Bell local wires and the insane politics involved in having an IISP to get Bell to fix/replace them.

It could be TSI or eBox or another IISP who first announces TPIA cable plans with Cogeco in Eastern Ontario, and myself and many others would naturally feel the need to at least have a look-see.
