 | Potential new NYC Fios customer As a pontentially new Fios customer in NYC, (I currently have TWC), what equipment does Fios over? Specific model numbers? What's good and what's bad ?
Fios is offering me ultimate HD with a multi room dvr for life, 1 free SD box and 1 HD box, 25/25, unlimited voice for $120 a month on a 2 year contract not including taxes and fees.
I currently pay $185 for TWC. |

I think the only real choice is in DVR push for a 7232 which has 500GB hard drive. Take 7216 is you ahve to (only 160 but allows external drive to expand). Try not to let them give you a 6416 as it does not support external drive, does not do full HD guide and you might have to pay to upgrade it later. |

 | reply to nyrmetros agree... try to get 7xxx series STB's. the guide is a lot smoother and the PQ is better.
Once you upgrade, you'll feel like you're in a new decade. No joke. You'll be asking yourself why you didnt do it sooner. |

 | reply to nyrmetros Everybody wants a Motorola 7232 as their free multi-room DVR for life.
But currently they are scarce. Your installer will most likely bring you a 6416 or a 7216, because that is all he has.
After installation if you want to "upgrade" online to a 7232 there is a one-time fee of $39.99.
Later this year the 7232 will be readily available again. In which case you can go to a local VZ store and exchange for free. Who knows when that will be. |

SRF26 join:2000-04-03 Jamaica, NY | After almost 30 years with TWC, I switched to FiOS in mid December 2011. I had no problems with TWC, but if I could get a FiOS Triple Play package with 25/25 Internet for almost 50% less than TWC service, it was too good an offer to refuse. I have a two (2) year contract, but that is fine with me because I am not going anywhere and the price is locked in for 24 months. So far I am satisfied with FiOS.
I got the Motorola QIP6416-2 DVR and a Motorola HD STB with no channel/time display. No problem with either STB. What makes the 7232 DVR so special? Any info is appreciated.
TIA...JL |

 | reply to nyrmetros Dont forget it runs IMG 1.9 a lot better. Everything is way smoother due to improved hardware specs. |

Also remember that when you DO upgrade (since they did not give you a 7232 in the first place) you lose all the programs that you had on the old STB's Hard Drive along with those stored on any external HD connected to the old STB (the data on the external is encoded so it is keyed to the STB so a new STB can not display it). |
|
 | Of course.
The design of all DVR boxes from the first version to the present was designed to prevent file sharing which in turn prevents piracy.
But a bigger concern of everyone on this board is when they can get a 7232 without being charged extra for it.
Those who got their 7232 before they became scarce are lucky. Those of us who signed up for the recent "Free Multi-room DVR for lfe" deal feel cheated when during installation we were given a 6416. I for one refuse to pay the price gouging $39.99 online "upgrade" fee. When the 7232 are no longer scarce I will demand my upgrade free of charge. And so should everyone else in the same situation. |
|
 | So bottom line, which boxes should I be demanding when I call and make an installation appointment? |
|
 | Demand? You can demand anything you want. What you'll get is whatever the tech has in the truck. |
|
 | But it doesn't hurt to ask the tech. Could be he has both 6416 and 7XXX on his truck. Probably would try and give you the 6416, but would give you the 7XXX if you asked. |
|
 | How much does Verizon charge for tech visits if there is an issue? |

Probably would try and give you the 6416, but would give you the 7XXX if you asked. When they came for my install back in February (when the 7232 boxes were not in seeming short supply, at least in the NYC area), my plan was to refuse the install unless they gave me a 7232 from their truck. Luckily I had nothing to worry about as they showed up with what I wanted.
In NYC, they're pushing really hard in the buildings where they already have a footprint (and grab market share from Time Warner Cable), so I'd bet they will do something to accommodate you if you refuse your install otherwise.....You can be sure most trucks will have some 7232s stashed away for the right customers....

 | reply to nyrmetros I'm in Manhattan and I had FiOS installed in September and it came with the 7232...maybe the shortages are in certain markets but I doubt NYC is one of them |

|
 | No SD boxes. They have a digital adapter which is SD, but offers no guide or VOD. HD box is really just one which is the 7100P2. You may get a P1 which has a clock. Don't think there is a performance difference between the P1 and the P2 though. |
