 | reply to Phibian Did some brief digging to see how the firmware update should work and found something pretty interesting in a scary way (»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TR-069):
------ CR over NAT The CWMP protocol also defines a mechanism for reaching the devices that are connected behind NAT (e.g. IP-Phones). This mechanism, based on STUN and UDP NAT traversal, is defined in document TR-111. This document also amends basic data models (to versions Device:1.1 and InternetGatewayDevice:1.2) defining parameters allowing feature configuration and exchange of relevant data between CPE and ACS. ------
What this means is that whoever runs the provisioning system (Bell), potentially has full access to your internal network IF you run PPPoE on the CellPipe or any other modem that supports CWMP! Putting it in bridged mode appears the definite way to go as it effectively prevents the modem from getting a external/wan address that would be connectable to via CWMP. That plus you running a firewall fully under your control |

|
 | reply to Phibian Its supposed to check with the bell servers when the modem connects so an easy way to check would be to reboot the modem and then check the logs.
If it hasn't been pushed out yet, I don't think it will go out before Monday. |

| reply to thoraz This is meant to allow the vendor to manage CPE devices behind a NAT firewall. Your CPE has to participate in the whole process by running an agent and protocol stack that creates a pin hole through the firewall and then exchanges the required information with a server.
VOIP adaptors sometimes use a similar protocol as part of their border session control. Your CPE must be configured appropriately and it initiates the transaction, not the modem / router. No big deal.
Even so, I think you are right that having your own CPE/firewall is more secure. |

| They are probably only using that to send firmware updates / reload configs, it's not really possible to spy on you or anything. There's a pretty limited set of commands that work with TR-069, check this page out »www.itu.int/ITU-T/workprog/wp_a5···isn=1872 |
|
 | TR-069 also means remote configuration, possibly to enable (if supported) WAN GUI / SSH which is the potential key to open other doors.
I agree unlikely but depending on how much stock you put in the statement "Trust No 1" your response/view my be different |

This situation is now beyond ridiculous as MID JUNE is around the corner. |

It's simply unacceptable at this point! TSI should be demanding the dropping of forced rental fees. Bell cant supply working modems or a fix in a reasonable amount of time, period, end of story. The 3 sagemcoms as a solution are the biggest joke, if they wanted to fix it, send EVERYONE with the problem sagemcoms, not 3 people.
Just compare what would happen to a bell customer with a faulty cellpipe (if they even give these to bell customers). The modem doesnt work SO THEY HAVE 3 OPTIONS. THATS RIGHT 3! 1. Go to a bell store, exchange for a sagemcom. 2. Call bell, arrange for a replacement sagemcom to be shipped. 3. Call bell, arrange for a tech to come look at the line and replace a modem.
It enrages me that Bell customers are being treated with same day replacements (at a bell store) and TSI customers have to wait 5 months and fight over 3 sagemcoms.
This is not cool.

This situation is now beyond ridiculous as MID JUNE is around the corner. At this point it should be unacceptable for bell to provide a firmware fix. What happens if this "fix" has bugs too? ANY PROBLEMS COULD RESULT IN ANOTHER 5 MONTHS OF WAITING FOR A NEW FIRMWARE.
Besides that, there are 2 known working firmwares (1 for stinger, 1 for 7330) that could be shipped out in the meantime.
Why continue shipping faulty firmware when you know its faulty? Simple, bell is doing this on purpose! this should be brought to the CRTC immediately! |

This situation is now beyond ridiculous as MID JUNE is around the corner. Bell just needs to replace these modems with the same ones they give their customers. Modem matching should exist the same way speed matching already does. |

|
1 edit | I don't mind an endless monthly fee, as long as I'm getting what I'm paid for. Paying 8/mo in this situation is equivalent to paying someone to dump shit into my house every 2-3 hours. And it's not even that, I feel as if I'm being targeted directly because I am not said person's direct customer; as if they're taking the extra effort to do it. |

| I started off a huge opponent of the $8/mth modem rental fee (and I still don't like it), but I'd happily pay it for the rest of my life if I had a modem that actually worked properly. I hate having to look up at the modem every time a website loads slowly, or Steam disconnects, in case the modem is rebooting again. Or having to manually reboot the modem before I make an important phone call (voip) to ensure that I don't have it die mid-call.
Frankly, I don't care whose fault it is at this point. I'm paying TSI, and I expect them to fix it. Going on 5 months is, frankly, ridiculous. |

| Why hasn't the CRTC been involved at this point to seek emergency relief, ie Sagemcom's? The solution is available, and has been available for as long as this issue has existed which is now 6+ months.
If they want to keep offering the Cellpipe as a rental, the fix is extremely simple:
• ship with firmware 1.0.4.3EF-STINGER for customers on Lucent Stinger remotes • ship with firmware 1.0.4.3EF-ISAM for customers on Alcatel 7330-ISAM remotes
Both of those firmwares are stable and work fine on their respective remote. Bell knows exactly what remote a customer will be hooked up to. It's on the internal work order. -- GO BLUE JAYS!

| Come on TSI, you told us the patch was going on Friday, and it did not. That much is evident.
Not a single message to say "We are aware and looking in to it.", "Sorry our/my/Bell's mistake, the patch will be going out this Wednesday". Just being left in the dark after another failed resolution is just as much a frustration. |

| I just wrote the CRTC at info@ccts-cprst.ca I encourage everyone to do the same
»www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/INFO_SHT/t1003.htm
Wholesale Internet rates and quality of service A wholesale customer is an Internet service provider who must use part of the large telephone and cable companies networks in order to offer Internet and other services to its own retail customers. The CRTC regulates how the wholesale customer is billed, rates and quality of service issues for wholesale services. This, in turn, ensures that Canadians have access to a range of Internet service providers. |
