Internet speed increase
Received a letter from RCN (Lehigh Valley - PA).
There are some new channels and an increase of Internet download speed with of course an increase of monthly fee

Ah that's it then. I noticed the increase in download speed to 25 Mbps this morning.

Yes, a price increase. But the channels listed in the mail, were one, the local RCN channel will now be in HD. And the other were hd versions of QVC and HSN. Which I thought were hd for some time. But come on. these are shopping channels. Who the cares. How about BBC America in HD, Or Create HD, the list can go on and on.

Is this going to be a nationwide thing? I'd love to see 75mbit in Boston.

I received a notice that 25mbps customers in DC will be upgraded to 50mbps (along with a relatively well buried price increase). Anyone know what the upstream will be?

Just remember, SecTV (PenTeleData) has limits for internet usage, and Dish would be Verizon DSL (lulz)

I fully understand. I'm going to head over to the local office tomorrow and complain. $14 increase is a decent size increase in my eyes. Especially (even after the price assurance time period) someone STILL pays about $10 less than me. Completely insane. I may have my fiance take ownership so we can take advantage of the promo. The CSR told us that would be the only option, but will cost $50 initially. It may be worth it in the long run. Plus I will get Starz with the deal... seems like the only option. It just sucks that I have to jump through hoops when i've been with RCN for years.

But you probably save that much in 2 months or less on promo. Let us know how this turns out if you would - I'm in the same boat. Still on the old CI bundle, and the numbers on my bill vs. the current prices on the website are way out of kilter.

My bill says that I've been upgraded, with a price increase, to 25mbps/2mbps, when I had signed up for 15mbps/2mbps. Doesn't the 25mbps service require a DOCSIS 3.0 modem? No written notice of a price increase, no explanation in the bill, nothing. My bill has apparently shot up $20/month, without proper explanation. I thought the provider was required by law to explain pricing changes in writing.

Did anyone else in DC get a letter regarding price increases?

These issues are weird and imply isolated market issues.

I just opened my current bill and the first thing I noticed was my rate went down from $43 + tax, to $40 and no tax (I'm dubious of the tax elimination). I thought "Cool".

Then a list of service improvements, reliability, and a couple new channels. (yawn)

Then I turned to page four and nearly had a heart attack:

"During January 2012, your internet download speed will significantly increase..."
Current Speed .....New Speed
1.5 - 5.0 Mbps.....10.0 Mbps
7.0 - 20.0 Mbps....25.0 Mbps
60.0 Mbps..........75.0 Mbps

I had been noticing my speeds were regularly inching past 10 Mbps, but still 740kbps up for several months.

Prior tests - today's included:
»/testhistory/755715/b27fd

You can see the large variability on the first two.

Though not addressed in RCN's bill, my upstream speed more than doubled!

At this point I need to check my router's settings to make sure it's wide open on the WiFi!

It's disturbing to hear about others' having speed slowdowns and price increases - something RCN is famous for sneaking in - but I'm psyched at this point. I'll add more as things change.

I haven't checked yet, but have to assume all of RCN's markets are getting, or already have gotten, the speed boosts.

Hopefully this isn't an early April Fools joke... :p

OK,

Just tried the local NDT server. Massive difference.

NOTE: The Argonne NDT site in the speedtest list has apparently been moved to Lemont. Thus the URL is dead. The new address is in the test results and I've added it to the speedtest list.

Did they remove the "No contract" option for the Lehigh Valley? I would have sworn that I saw no contract pricing yesterday but now it's only showing $123.95 for the top tier package.

You are correct about the prices being different today. Just a couple of days ago, they had a promo for three years guaranteed of 25Mbps at $29.99 (it went up $5 each year). Now it's almost $95. I'm not sure what's going on there, and I'm hoping it's a typo since it literally tripled overnight.

Regulate

@rcn.com

These prices have to include a Signature TV bundle of some sorts.
They increased the Bundles with no TIVO/Premiere pack included!
Who the hell is doing the Marketing at RCN?
