Re: [Rant] Property taxes

As a non-resident living in Wyoming, my car fee is $15/year, zero property taxes assessed. Residents have to pay a yearly fee based on the value of their car, so it starts high then goes down each year.

The only property taxes I have to pay in Wyoming are for my house, which comes to about $700/year.

This state may not offer much civilization-wise, but it is sure cheap to live in.

I matters when almost EVERYTHING is taxed at 8% or more.

So who pays for the civic services you use in common with others, such as police and fire services? Who pays for road maintenance? Who pays for libraries and other civic services? The tooth fairy?

I bought a lexus is 250 last year.......got it from a friend who was going to have it repossessed.

I paid 12 k for it...... it was blue booked at 23400.

I get to the DMV (in CT) and the guy behind the desk tells me it doesn't matter how much I paid for it. I must be charged tax on the bluebook value. Came in just under 1000 bucks. I was pretty upset at that point......I mean WTF, now I'm getting taxed on money I didn't even spend.

FFW to now. I just got my tax bill from my town......and on it....is the lexus at 323 dollars!! Again being taxed on money I didn't spend.

Then there's the camaro, which has 120k on it and is worth next to nothing due to it being broken, also 80 something in taxes on that!

Pretty sick of CT and it's taxes. Especially the retro active ones.

I know the feeling man. Hell our house sat on the market for 3 years without a buyer and the appraisers price keep going UP AND UP. When asked about it the county says the appraiser is independent but i think that's BS. Every year our house values keep going up and every year our TAXES keep going up. We paid like 1300 on our house in taxes this year compared to 600 last year and 400 the year before. Total BS and corruption. .

Irrelevant. It's not a consumption tax but a value added tax. What you paid (consumption) has zero relevance to the tax levied, which is based on third party value (Blue Book).

Nothing to do with your sale, but the sales of similar houses in your particular area. Our taxes are $3300. That's double what we paid in 2001.

Well the thing is there are no sells in our area. Our Realtor told us in a 3 month period only one house sold in the entire county. LOL Things around here are dead. Contractors and the housing business in general is a dead goat. Hell 5 years ago everyone in our family was in residential construction including myself. Only one brother law remains with my father in-law in the business. He has been a contractor for 50 years and was making 200k a year before the crash...The past couple months have been the worse so far. He`s sold everything he owns and doesn't know what to do now. You do something for 50 years. Save a little money and are doing OK just to have the entire economy crash on you. In the mean time our taxes are going up. Sucks.

Hell, A 5 minute look on craigslist in our area show the desperation of people. Just hordes of people that worked in construction looking for work. Any kind of work. No ones hiring and if they are they only pay 8 bucks an hour because they know they can take advantage of people. Ive been working for $10 an hour for what should be a $50k a year salary. Times suck.

KY likes to rip you off on vehicle tax also! They do not pro-rate the taxes so if you move out of state on Jan 1st you still owe KY for the whole year, even though you are paying taxes in another state.

What's worse if you buy a vehicle from someone in KY & live in Ky they tax that person for the value of the vehicle for the whole year and tax you for the whole year. Talk about double dipping!

The state sales tax is 4% and the county that I live in adds an additional 2%. So, total is 6%.

I actually did a little research on Wyoming after asking that. Seems Wyoming is flush with mineral riches, from coal to natural gas and even uranium. A lot of beautiful places there too. Not much rain, huh? Do you like it there?

I could say that they are paid with my federal tax dollars. Police and fire are federal. Roads also paid via the fedral govt. I assume the library on post is also paid via federal dollars but I have never used it. School (for the kids) is via the federal govt and state of texas since the school is a texas school district but has no taxable base.

In our area - local police, fire, libraries, and roads are paid via local money. I don't know of a state where this is not the case. Now the Fed may make some money available but it does not come close to paying for all of the costs.
