Re: About that incandescent light bulb ban...

I don't disagree that upgrading and maintaining our electrical infrastructure would be a good move. Losing the amount of transmitted power that we do is just stupid and only works in an economy where the fuel needed to create that power is dirt cheap. But that is a big, expensive and long term project.

Burning more electricity than is necessary because we insist on using old technology is just as dumb.

And Jack, show me the news article, government paper, link or something that shows they removed and replaced those LED's. All of those areas were given grants from the Virginia Department of Mines Minerals and Energy to do the change over. I just can't seem to find anything by Google search that indicates they were removed. I would think if they were I'd at least get on hit on a search engine about it.

Well I just went to dinner at Applebees with the wife and went through the main intersection at Gloucester County Courthouse that had been converted. It is now Incandescent on all the lights.

Maybe they don't want the public to know it didn't work out? '

I find that interesting since there is no documentation that I can find to support this reversion back to the old lighting.

With all the transparency in local government it would seem that there would be something out there in the local papers decrying the expense of this failed program.

I really don't know anything else to say except what I've observed with my own eyes. I saw the one I referred to earlier on my way to dinner being converted several years ago as the bucket truck caused quite a traffic jam. When they converted it back I didn't see but it's definitely the old style incandescent now. Actually I thought it was quite effective when I first saw them in operation. I had not really noticed they had been changed back.

Now there is a possibility they are using a new lens diffusing the light where the individual lights can't be distinguished as they were when first installed and are like what Channel One posted. That I have no way to determine but I've never heard of it.

On our shopping trip to Newport News several days ago south on US17 to NN and on to Jefferson Avenue and Fort Eustis Blvd all of the lights are now incandescent that I know were changed to LED.

I know what I see. I can't speak for why it was not disclosed. You have to live here to know that government here is far from transparent and it's unbelievable to me how many times they have to be taken to court to force them to give up public information. The counties are handled by VDOT but the cities have their own department for traffic signals.

Actually I am wondering if the signals you saw were replacements for damaged ones due to accident/weather damage, they may come as incandescent instead of LED as LEDs would have been a retrofit item.

No all the separate stoplights with all the individual lamps and at different locations. I saw no LED that had been previously installed.

Went to Richmond today from Mathews County. About 80 miles one way. I observed every traffic signal I passed and did not see even one LED installation. This included the famous Midlothian Pike. They just seem to have disappeared.
