we have archaic equipment still in use from east to west coast.
Its not only the age of the infrastructure, which I believe is an average of 30+ years old, there is also the pending loss of 36 to 70 GW of generating capacity by 2018 due to new environmental (EPA) regulations.
Wayne -- "It is sobering to reflect that one of the best ways to get yourself a reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go about repeating the very phrases which our founding fathers used in the struggle for independence." - Charles A. Beard
Took this picture last year from the new bridge just south of Hoover Dam. The water was still high but as you can see most of the water was being diverted around the turbines into outer diversion tunnels through inclined shafts 50 feet in diameter and 600 feet long, out of view further down. Prolly only using less than 10% of the dams power generating capacity.
Afterwards we took the tour (second time for me) and I asked the tour guide why the generators were so little used. He said that the power was not needed at this time.. I then asked if it was ever needed? He said various regulations control the power output.. I was thinking of the obvious comment to that but I decided to keep my mouth shut. Didn't want to get labeled as a terrorist or something.
