There, I feel marginally better! I picked up in 8gb iTouch on reward points a few years back. This was before I had a smartphone. So I viewed this as getting an mp3 player, and I could put some apps on it, use the wifi, etc. It was by far the biggest waste of points I've yet spent. It's now been relegated to a play toy for our son.
It was strictly the iTunes software that turned me off. Having used other mp3 players before, this was by far the worst interface ever if you just want to manage your music collection. The software is only marginally better now than it was when I got the device.
The company I work for gave out 2gb iPod nano's as xmas gifts. I told my wife I'd let her have it, but only if she agreed to never ask me a question about how to use the software. ...

Steve MehsGun Control Is Using A Steady HandPremium join:2005-07-16 | reply to Derspankster Like all things that come out of Cupertino, iTunes is pure dog shit. I hated using it when I had the iPod and iPhone . As a media player, it blows. Its clunky, loads a bunch of extra non needed crap, comes bundled with QuickTime, Ive had Restores fail because iTunes fucked up, poor visualizations, poor sound quality, lousy overall interface.
Winamp has been my media player of choice since 1999. As soon as I bought my first iPod, 2005, I downloaded some plugins for Winamp that were supposed to allow me to synch, but they didnt really work well, so I stuck with iTunes. I started replacing my pirated music collection with iTunes purchased music, DRM and all, so now I had no choice but to use that god awful software. When all iTunes music became DRM free I was overjoyed, paid the 30 cents per song and redownloaded my music so that I could play it on Winamp. Winamp, IMO provides much better sound quality, especially when you take the time and customize the EQ to your liking. I also love the Milkdrop full screen visualizations from Geiss.
Not using iTunes as a media player was my first step away from Apple. Last year I dumped my iPhone, earlier this year I got rid of my iPod Classic and bought a Sony Walkman, and now with the Android Music Store, a few weeks ago, I decided instead of uninstalling iTunes, to completely reformat my hard drive so I could be sure that I have no remnants of anything related to Apple.
Now I use Google Music to buy music, download it to my PC via Google Music Manager, then sync it to my MP3 Player using Winamp. I can wirelessly synch my tablet and phone with my music library as well if I wish, using the Winamp Android app, but now instead of using actual music files, I just stream from Googles Music Cloud.
I love Winamp, not just as an all-around media player, but the extras are cool. Their Shoutcast network of internet radio stations is top notch, I love the Metro Lyrics service. This is one powerful little program, Ive been using it for 12 years, and probably dont know half of what it is capable of. I thought Winamp would go downhill when AOL bought Nuffsoft out, but it hasnt.
100% Apple free and lovin it!
quote: I curse the day I bought an Ipod.
Do what I did, and dump the damn thing! The iPod is an awful personal media player. I love my Walkman, the only issue I have with it is its only 16GB, which is fine for me, for now, and I dont like the headphone jack on the bottom. The UI is much better than the iPod, I love the external speaker and sound quality is much improved. Over the weekend, Sony just released their Walkman Z Series Android based MP3 Player in Japan. 4.3 inches of Android touch screen goodness with a dual core 1.0 GHz Tegra 2. As soon as its released in the US, Im buying it.

| reply to Derspankster For those of you up in arms about iTunes and iDevices, try Cowon products, while they supply a media program you don't need it to copy/paste/drag/drop to the players, and the sound quality is vastly superior.

| reply to Derspankster I haven't installed or used iTunes, Winamp has done fine since the 90s, and I haven't touched Quicktime since about then either. I remember installing Safari a few years back, and it tried to annex my machine into the Apple empire, but I refused the Quicktime EULA.
I don't ever intend on using itunes, nor recommending it to anyone, for pretty much all the reasons stated here. |

And then doubles up all the songs in the list? What? And..oh...my personal favourite. This ipod touch has been bricked 3 times in its life. Including the day we got it. (Stupid me...shoulda clued in right there) Anyways, the common thread in the device being bricked? Being plugged into itunes. That means another trip to the Apple store for them to fix it. Here's the really laughable part. Every single time, the itard at the store says "We'll reinstall the is, bit have you backed it up? Because its going to be wiped." The last time, I told the guy "Yes I know. But I'm used to that because that's what happens everytime I plug it into iTunes to begin with." -- I'm a man, but I can change. If I have to. I guess. |

RiamenPremium join:2002-11-04 Calgary | reply to Derspankster *shrug* I've been using iTunes for years. It's always worked well for me. Much prefer syncing over drag and drop. However Apple needs to rewrite it. The interface is getting cluttered, they're putting too much into a single program. |

 | reply to Derspankster Trying to figure what the hate is for iTunes..... Been using it for years. Import stuff into it and it keeps the files organized. Connect iPod or iPhone and it syncs with the music and other things (contacts, notes, etc). Create playlists and they work, etc. I can create a random playlist of, say 10GB that will pick 10GB out of my library to sync, etc.
I don't get the love for drag and drop. Have that on my Droid X and it's horrible. Why would I want to manage files this way? I ended up getting iSyncr to sync it to iTunes. It's one of the may ways Android needs help in the usability front.
I will admit it tries to do too much and the UI needs an overhaul but the concept works. In much the same way that Aperture, iPhoto, and Adobe Lightroom work for photos.
They must be doing something right as all the iPod "killers" have fallen by the wayside, "Plays For Sure" is DOA, and pretty much you have a bunch of others (Cowon, Sansa, Sony) and the iPhine. |

| reply to Derspankster My sister spent 400 bucks on an iPod solution for my mother (also got her a docking station to make it into a stereo for her apartment.
I'm actually going to be taking my new 32 gig epad Transformer up to show my mother. It is about 5 times as big, and thus easier to hold and use. I can put any damned songs on it I feel like. And the inherent speakers on it are loud enough it doesn't even need speakers as an additive.
Wish my sister wasn't such a bloody yuppie and had consulted me before buying mom the damned hard to use, hard to employ doodad that was meant for a yuppie's pocket, not 78 year old ladies who can't relate to technology.
It all sorts of effort for sister to load the iPod, takes me no effort whatsoever to load my Transformer. |

It all sorts of effort for sister to load the iPod, takes me no effort whatsoever to load my Transformer. Perhaps you need to put aside your issues with your sister and look at why the iPod is perfect for your Mom. Instead of chastizing your sister, try to understand why she may be right.
Assuming your mom has a computer, it's easier to say "Buy your musig from iTunes" and connect it here to load it. For the most part iTunes will do that automatically. You don't have to teach her drag/drop, etc.
And Yes, you can put any song on an iPod. Forget FLAC for the 10 people that think it's cool. WMA, forget that because nobody uses that anymore. MP3, got that. AAC/MPEG4, got that too. I always cross shop Amazon and iTunes and never had an issue. Same with "other" MP3 files.
Then there's the ecosystem. What no Android has is the breadth of devices. When I had an iPod and iPhone, I could connect it to my home stereo and control it from the remote, I have a Sony alarm clock with an iPod dock (that has line in) that could control the iPhone, etc. There's thousands of things that will work with the iOS devices. Android, none. I lost a lot of functionality when I went to my Droid X.
Was in Best Buy the other day looking at shelf systems with a friend. Almost all of them had some sort of iPod/iPhone dock.
The Transformer is more a tablet than an iPod. So the fair comparison would be to the iPad. And that's a whole different ball game.
Lots of misinformation on these threads from both sides of the camp.... |
