Re: [AB] Future Telus line speeds?

Telus would simply be operating like a reseller the same way Teksavvy does if they did this; it's not a profitable/sensible thing to do. Short-term telus will be fine bandwidth-wise with VDSL2 tricks and their build-out moving DSLAMS closer to the customer - this will get them up into the 50-100mbit region without excessive investment. Beyond that telus will eventually just deploy fibre everywhere (replace the last 500m or so from the DSLAMS currently with GPON or somesuch).

Not to rain on your parade, but share price doesn't indicate much. The only thing that really matters is the profit as compared to the market capitalization. Share price is artificial.

Since Canada is at least a decade behind the rest of the world when it comes to internet i'd look to a company such as AT&T which has really done nothing. In England they have bonded vdsl but Canada is a huge country and unlike the rest of the world everything to do with telecoms here seem to be about profits not what the subscriber may want or need.

In England they have bonded VDSL ??? Haha lol

AT&T has about half a million bonded VDSL1.5 customers (they deployed a junk chipset, its not really VDSL2). TELUS has already launched bonded VDSL2 in TELUS Quebec territory, and a launch in the west will happen in 2012.

You can shit on TELUS all you want, but we have the most advanced DSL deployment in North America.

Better than Mexico? Haiti? Trinidad AND Tobago? Wow, that is impressive.

There are 194+ countries in the world and we have a new global marketplace with which we must be competitive.

Keep setting the bar low!

Re: [AB] Future Telus line speeds?

Twisted pair is still the chokepoint in reaching cable-like speeds. It has so many distance issues, and physics just make it inferior to cable, I'm baffled as to why Telus is still investing in an obsolete technology. After all these upgrades (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL, VDSL2) you're still not competitive with cable, and it probably costs the same amount of money if you did FTTH.

AT&T, Verizon are finding this out, and cable has 70% broadband market share in some areas primarily because DSL is just not competitive with cable.

Just a question: On a per customer basis, which is cheaper to deploy: DSL or Cable?
