Which modem to buy on $25 budget

Using Comcast Blast in Philadelphia area. I've found these on eBay for $25:

Linksys CM100
Motorola 5101
Motorola 5101u
Motorola 52120

Something else?

I'm apparently not super savvy in the ways of this stuff. I have done a little browsing through the forums here and am still clueless. I'd like to purchase one of these ASAP(like tonight). Thanks

Any of them would work but buying a modem through eBay is not a good idea. There is a very good chance the modem will be defective, already registered to someones account or be stolen equipment not returned to a cable provider. You should only buy a modem from a reputable retailer.

Like Saratoga says, avoid buying modems off ebay, Craigslist or anything else like that. Buy from a legit dealer only and save yourself the headache.

These are 3 modems I've read about that will work great and will futureproof yourself for a few years to come.

You may wince at the price, but pick one, spend the money and be done with it and the rental fees for a few years or more, depending on your tier.

Sb5101 out of those.

You can buy on ebay, but if it looks like it has been opened then they might have ripped the nonvol out and might have a clone, though, luckily on Comcast(or unlucky for them) clones get banned in like 2 weeks.

So all in all, you should be good.

If you do want to buy a modem from eBay, you could have the seller tell you what the mac address and serial number of the modem are and then call Comcast and tell them what you're doing and give them the info that the seller provided you with. Then, CC can tell you if the modem is legit.

if the modem is already registered on someones account, Comcast will recieve a red flag when you give them the serial number and mac address. Either Comcast will inform you that it is already registered to another account or they will add it to your account and it will delete off that other person's account. If it's stolen from a cable company the red flag will pop up with information on what cable company it belongs to, if they want it back, along of other things.

I like the Linksys CM100. I used one for many years and it works perfectly well.

Sorry, but wrong -- most are fine.

Anyway, I like my Linksys BEFCMU10 v.4 and would get another one if it died. DOCSIS 3 is still overpriced and unnecessary. You should be able to find a new, legit one for $25 - $30.

Empirical evidence ?

@comcast.net

I just bought an Arris 502g from ebay for $30 shipped...activated it with comcast last night, works fine...how's that for evidence? I was going to buy the 722g from the comcast kiosk at my local best buy,but the rep wasn't very convincing as to why I'd need it for their blast service.

You got lucky. You are but "one" example. This is not empirical evidence.

I was simply relating my experience. If you want a sample significant enough to be considered valid to you,you might want to do that research yourself.Assuming I was lucky is just as foolish as someone saying everything you buy used will work.

Here's hoping my first post will help someone else save some money.

The burden of proof is not on me.. I'm not the one who made the "absolute" statement....

You are just very lucky.
I know half a dozen people who was trying to save money and bought modems on ebay for Comcast Internet. They had all been stolen and couldn't be setup.
They are now just conversation pieces or door stops.

Overpriced/unnecessary *why*?

If you do any online gaming at all - or have multiple devices online via a router - you want all the bandwidth you can afford.

We have two desktops that are connected via a router (wired connections in both cases - one 100 mbps and one gigabit) - and we're not exactly flush with cash. Yet the leased WBM-760A is actually paying for itself. Greater performance *and* greater connection stability than the (personally-owned) SB-5120 it replaced. (I'm taking the lumps both ways - I personally am paying the leased-modem cost and I was the one that originally bought the SB-5120 in 2005. However, since I was also the one that picked up the WBM-760A, I'll take my lumps gladly.)

It may not matter in your case (if you have only a single computer or other device); however, if you have at least two computers or other devices that need connectivity at the same time, D3 is a smart choice.

I agree and plus it future proofs yourself for later on down the road when D3 modems becomes a requirement for service.
