Re: Comcast shows off its new 'Barcelona' HD guide upgrade!

I think they are having the students film stuff for the school channel.

My sources at the Philly Home Show tell me that comcast will have a live demo of on screen guide 3.0 at that show - the show starts saturday at the philly convention center.

I am going down on Thursday and will attempt to take some photos.

Did you get any pictures?

I totally forgot to bring my camera.. The vh-1 Mob Wives were there. The guide looks like the links that I previously posted, running on a pace set top box, quick response, smooth animations, lots of color, movie posters, channel logos and the ability to favorite an actor or sports team. And the box-rermote uses RF not IR (the box was "hidden" behind the display).

·Comcast

I've seen the video and I FREAKIN' WANT THAT!!!! I wish Comcast would understand that if they offered that guide by me, I'd have no problem renting their box. I wonder what hardware the "servers" he mentioned in the video are using, anyone from Comcast privvy to that stuff? I also wonder what internet speed package he's using in the video, possibly the Extreme 105? I mean technically they can have the top of the line services without paying a penny, lucky bastards lol

Thanks for that video.

Is there any chance at all that Philly will get this new guide this year 2012?

It just looks so much better then the crappy current guide!

The following posts are from Comcast's Ted Hodgins, Sr. Director, Video Product Development - Navigation, in Media & Entertainment, "New Guide for Scientific Atlanta Cable Boxes" blog:

»blog.comcast.com/2010/05/new-gui···xes.html

Q & A about which guide (mid 2012 release for SA/Cisco markets or On-Screen Guide 2.0) future features will be in. All the future features mentioned will be in On-Screen Guide 2.0 and not in the mid 2012 release.

quote:
Ted thank you again for replying. I am happy that the older boxes are not going to be ignored. You had mentioned several improvments that will be implemented in the summer. I do ask clarification if these next few items will also be implemented with the summer update.
Being able to search on-demand shows.
being able to use the zoom feature while in on-demand
the ad at the bottom of the menu becoming smaller and less obtrusive.
the large blue box in video previews becoming smaller and disappearing on its own.

while I am here I will ask one question is there anyway to block a channel from appearing in the guide, such as the numerous adult channels. some of the descriptions are morally objectionable and would perfer them not to be seen. if they can not be blocked from the guide I would like to see comcast consider such an option for a future update. again that you for your time and attention on these questions and I am looking forward to seeing the guide enhanced in the near future.
regards
Jim Nava

Hello Mr. Nava. To answer your specific questions:

Search for On Demand is available with On-Screen Guide 2.0 and On-Screen Guide 3.0. This feature will not be available on our legacy SA/Cisco cable boxes.

The ability to use the Zoom feature while in On Demand is not scheduled to be available on our legacy SA/Cisco cable boxes.

Banner ads in the guide grid becoming smaller is something that is available with On-Screen Guide 2.0 and 3.0.

As a reminder, the overlay screen that appears while viewing an On Demand Preview (like any guide screen) can be dismissed at anytime by pressing the Exit button on the remote control. This screen is much smaller (and located at the bottom of the screen) starting with On-Screen Guide 2.0. The overlay screen will also fade off the screen automatically after a few seconds in On-Screen Guide 2.0.

To block the Adult titles from appearing in the guide grid on the guide you have today, use the Comcast silver remote control, press the Menu button twice, then select Parental Control, then Hide Titles. Here you can hide the titles of Adult and TV-MA programs or just Hide the Adult titles. Choose your option and then press OK/Select. A checkmark will appear next to your chosen option. There is also a complete parental control overview available here: »por-chr.cimcontent.net/ui/pdf/me···1010.pdf

Thanks again for your comments and feedback and I hope the above is helpful..

Comcast keeps showing off new guides, but I almost doubt we will ever see this actually deployed.

On-Screen Guide 2.0 is being deployed to Comcast customers in SA/Cisco markets with AnyRoom DVR functionality (see first quote extract below).

The following quotes are extracts from Comcast's Ted Hodgins "New Guide for Scientific Atlanta Cable Boxes" blog post (click the link to see the entire post):

has already started to roll out to customers and it is available now in most all of our Cisco areas of Florida, Georgia and Mississippi with Anyroom DVR. Additional areas will be coming on-line with On-Screen Guide 2.0 over the next 30 days.

Some RNG devices may go right to On-Screen Guide 2.0 while others may start with the features being added to the current guide. This will depend on the timing and readiness for each area.

Welcome to our world, here have some cake.

Hopefully Comcast will see the errors of their way, repent, and give us all free premium service for two years.

what takes them so long to release new guides? theyve always been way behind satellite and TiVo and FIOS' original guide from 4 years ago is still better than what the vast majority of comcast users have.

im pretty familiar with typical software and hardware product cycles and 2 years for relatively minor upgrades, even with segregated hardware, is ridiculous. comcast is a big enough company to have more frequent releases than Verizon, especially when playing catch-up.

the backed mess? the headend setup? Comcast seems to have some kind of headend issues that makes IntelliStar 2 aka Weather star HD not work right. Some comcast systems have it but the big markets are missing it. and It's been said to be a tech issue.

Comcast seems to have a lot of stuff that only shows up in some areas and does not seem to go beyond that.

The channel map is still a mess come areas seem to have parts of the master channel list idea but even then the numbers are still not the same.

It's just like trying to get a cable card some times it's the call center or the cable guy who did not get the work order right or knows how to work with cable cards.

i know they have some technical issues. i know they have 2 (or more?) completely separate systems as they gobbled up smaller companies. i know they're trying to synchronize the features and experiences of both. But that's not an excuse. I dont expect them to waste tons of money when not necessary, but i do expect a Guide system that doesnt remind me of Web TV circa 1996, and where a new, top of the line STB that doesn't freeze or stutter and for which fixes have already been made but that wont be released for 9+ months. Unacceptable.

The RNG200 has a TON of bugs. It's been out over 6 months now (to my knowledge). I think it's gotten 2 updates and the bugs either still exist or were fixed with new ones added. I don;t look at STBs the same way i did 5 years ago. I want a new product every 1-2 years and i expect bugs to be fixed in a few months. i buy a new phone every year. I expect new and improved. That is my standard.

I also look at Kinect and get extremely jealous. motion- and voice-based control is no longer the future, it's the present. kinect-based games and navigation aren't "cool" anymore, they are the STANDARD. So while many people are using voice and hand motions to change channels, search programs, and set recordings, we're stuck with the shitty comcast guide system, just praying that we'll have a slightly less shitty guide system within the next 2 years.

the least comcast could do is add Kinect support.

And i've been a comcast fanboi for 10 years...
