Re: Backstabbed?

Thanks I fixed my terminology. Sorry, lol.

Yeah I was not impressed finding the screws out. Talk about not taking pride in your craft or trade.

Am I correct in thinking you would say "replace EVERYTHING."?

Not really, if all is working properly and the devices are not too mudded up by the drywall guys, then, if you wish, you can release the backstabs and re-wire to the screws, however, keep in the back of your mind, the “electrician” who did this type of work probably used the cheapest devices he could find, and is that what you want in your home?

As such, and considering what your time is worth you might be better off by cutting off and replacing all of the “builders specials” crap and replacing it all.

Quality outlets and switches are not expensive at all and very well may be less expensive than trying to recover the existing devices.

Thanks.

I am considering replacing everything with new..... My thoughts were the same as yours in terms of "why would I want low cost/quality" in the house.

Do you have a suggestion on if I should buy from the big box vs the supply house?

You mentioned Graybar in an earlier post and in the past, they wouldn't sell to the public.

The big box stores sell the same outlets, switches, etc that the supply houses do. Ask any supply house what they think about Lowes, Home Depot, etc and they'll tell you they hate them. Again, they sell the same stuff and can usually sell it cheaper. They both will have 'cheap' devices up to commercial-grade devices. Stay away from the .59c outlets and .24c switches, of course !

I have access to Graybar.....

But if their stuff is the same then it wouldn't matter now.

I've never had a problem walking into the local Graybar and making an over the counter purchase or catalog order. It's always been for networking-related products, but they've happily have taken my money. Pretty helpful too when I had a question or needed to find something that wasn't readily listed in their main catalog.

There is (was ?) one in Lima OH that had a sign on the door of something to the effect of only selling to contractors and not to the general public. Did they enforce it ? Don't know... It could keep those away who walk in and say "I'm trying to do 'this', can you give me the stuff I'll need?" and similar !! If you walk in and say "I need (10) Hubbell CR15 outlets", they may do it.

Some of those stores are B2B only - they are wholesalers.

That said I've had no problems buying from Cooper Electric Supply which is the most well known local supply house here. I once bought 30 ground rods from them from a tower grounding project. They just loaded them up, took credit card and no worries.

Grainger gave me resistance initially to open an account, so what I did was I came back with documents from when I was doing (software and telecom) consulting as a sole proprietor. No problem at all buying stuff from them now. I can't buy stuff that needs a license (eg Freon) but I can buy pretty much anything else.

I used to work at an electrical supply house and I know why many discourage non-contractors and what-not. People come in, as I mentioned above, and want you to tell them what they need (and how to do a task). Guys working behind the counter can't give that sort of advice. Some might know, but you can't do it for liability reasons.

In the end too though, they'll probably charge 'list' price for everything, which will be HIGH ! The customer may as well go to the big-box store, pay less, and still not get advice or instructions.
