It's not the SSID that bothers me.

It's not the SSID that bothers me, its the collection of the MAC address of the router that makes me weary.

Wonder how long it will be before big brother wants a copy of that data from Google.

SSID's are easily changeable. MAC addresses, not so easily spoofed. I wonder how easily it would be to try to effectively eliminate methods of anonymity if they can identify your traffic by having the MAC of your router.

I think it is really easy to clone a MAC.

MAC addresses aren't transmitted beyond the first hop (except for IPv6 without privacy extensions - even in this case, it'd be the MAC address of your computer - not the router - that's exposed).

Also, Google isn't collecting the MAC address that anyone outside of your network would ever see - they're collecting the BSSID of the network, which is typically the MAC address of your router's internal network interface (not the external, cable modem-facing one).

Furthermore, if the omnipotent Big Brother wanted to know the BSSID if your router, they can easily obtain it themselves by driving down your street - no need to risk exposing their venture by asking for the cooperation of third parties.

It makes some people scared, but you're the first person that's said it makes him tired.

Well I'd like to look up my old roommate - who owes me $, via his SSID, which is pretty original...

Do any google employees have access to the directory? If so, what if they are in the same situation as I? The fact is, the majority of people don't know that hiding their SSID is even an option on their routers, let alone how to do it. It's just 1 more, of many, many ways, to find you.
