Hewitt, NJ | I for one would be very interested in seeing a write-up, I've been toying with the idea of building an HTPC for a while. Couple of quick questions if you have time to comment:
--How fast is channel changing? I've heard reports that on some of the tuner cards, it's even slower than on the existing CV boxes. No matter how much everything else improves, that might be a deal-breaker for me.
--Does CV have a solution yet for getting SDV channels when using CableCard? We don't use on-demand much, but often enough that we don't want to lose it. |

Channel changing is instantaneous on the computer. The only delay is waiting for the network tuner to lock the frequency of the requested channel. For me so far, typically under a second.
I don't use on-demand, couldn't tell you if it works or not. Network tuners are unidirectional; meaning you can't request something on demand like you would from the cable box. To view something on pay per view, you'd have to order it via phone.
To get switched digital video, you need a tuning adapter, compatible tuner and a subscription to programming being offered via SDV. CV offers the adapters for free. CV lists the Ceton InfiniTV 4 and the Moxi HD tuners as compatible. Typically the kinds of programming offered via SDV are international iO packages (eg. international channels). |
