1 edit | [Rant] $30 to diagnose issue with sticking home button? So my 4 which is about 14 months old has a home button the is starting to fail. Sometimes it doesn't work and I have to press it a few times to get it to operate. So I called Apple Support for the first time and was told it would be $30 to even talk to me about it. That's crazy. I asked if it would be the same to make an appointment in the store and he said it would be. So since it is out of warranty it will cost $30 just to have someone look at it? -- "So, Lone Starr, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb."

Many places that "do not charge a shop fee" just bundle it in with other services. -- The irony of common sense, it is not that common. I cannot deny anything I did not say. You are paying for a service, for them to diagnose the problem. At the shop I worked at we never charged for diagnostics if we had to investigate the cause of the issue. Most of the time, we knew what was wrong with it upon first seeing it, or any of the given solutions would cost a similar price.
As it is, the iPhone 4 home button is a total bitch to replace because you have to literally disassemble the whole phone to get to it. That means you need to take the back off - 2 screws, mainboard out - about 8-10 screws, charge port out - 2 screws, 8 screen screws off, and then carefully pry it apart. There isn't much use in "diagnosing" an iP4 home button because it'll either need to be cleaned or replaced and I'm going to charge for either if I've gotten that far. |

Re: [Rant] $30 to diagnose issue with sticking home button? Chances are if you go to the store they won't charge you, or if you complain a bit they might waive the fee. |

I understand your point, but over the years, all of us (most likely) have received a great deal of support at the store from them without charge. Over the years, I've had two adapters replaced, the chasis replaced twice and, at least, 10 hours of genius time all for no charge. The store has expenses and salaries to pay, I was surprised that all of these services were provided for my, out of warranty, MacBook without cost. "sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you" They got you this time, but over the years, their service (and the cost) is an outstanding value. Look at it this way, it now costs $30 to park your car for an NFL game. |

Re: [Rant] $30 to diagnose issue with sticking home button? Doesn't the $30 go towards the repair price if it needs to go that route? |

 | reply to ptrowski My PC shop has a $30 estimate charge and it will go toward to repairs if customer approve the repairs. It's the only fair way to do it. |

I can see them charging to look at it and determine what is wrong. Then if you decide to get it repaired they should put the $30 towards the repair price.
If you don't decide to get it repaired then they charge you for their time.
You never know, it may be a quick fix that they are able to do right there and it only costs you $30? -- "Growing up happens in a heartbeat. One day you're in diapers, the next day you're gone. But the memories of childhood stay with you for the long haul."

DavisPhotogFlyingphotogPremium,MVM join:2001-08-26 Rohnert Park, CA | Total disassembly and reassembly time of an iPhone 4 will take more than 30 minutes and will almost certainly cost more than $30. It probably either needs cleaning (which I'd charge $35-40 for) or a home button flex, which the shop I worked at would have charged at least $50 for:
