A strong user name and password is always a good idea, but unless you've explicitly enabled remote access (default is disabled), any attempts to access the router GUI from the WAN side will be automatically blocked by the router.

Actually, I believe the Verizon default is enabled. They may have changed this, but it used to be enabled so that they could get into "their" router if you reported a problem.

A few years ago they sent out emails telling everyone to change the default Password, but I don't think they ever switched the remote access.

Again, not looking at the router settings or the actual log, I could be totally wrong.

No, the default is disabled.

VZ however does however have a secure backdoor into the router through the CPE management port (4567).
