A strong user name and password is always a good idea, but unless you've explicitly enabled remote access (default is disabled), any attempts to access the router GUI from the WAN side will be automatically blocked by the router. -- There are 10 kinds of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who don't.

 | Actually, I believe the Verizon default is enabled. They may have changed this, but it used to be enabled so that they could get into "their" router if you reported a problem.
A few years ago they sent out emails telling everyone to change the default Password, but I don't think they ever switched the remote access.
Again, not looking at the router settings or the actual log, I could be totally wrong. |

VZ however does however have a secure backdoor into the router through the CPE management port (4567). -- There are 10 kinds of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who don't.
