Re: Why do people use cash to buy gas? The company I retired from was the largest maker of banknote readers. Years back someone had the idea of fitting the pump with a reader.
Those wishing to pay with cash, could. Just like a vending machine. It was test marketed all over. Never was successful enough for the pump mfg to put it in their pumps.
The credit card won that battle. Don't know if any are still used in the US. There are some in Europe.
