They can change the firmware of any modem connected to their network to what ever version they've deemed appropriate.

That is standard policy with most cable companies. The firmware your modem came with was never fully tested by Charter so they push the latest certified version to your modem even if it is a downgrade.

I think the fact that they can and will do this is spelled out in the TOS even.
Hopefully you will not have any of the issues that some others are having with the version they pushed to you.
Search back through the posts here and you will see that many people have experienced the same exact downgrade as you have. Myself included three or four times.

One of the threads: »[HSI] Any update on new SB6120 firmware being tested?

There are several others if you browse about. Regardless, for most users, it makes no difference.

Do a speed test from here »speedtest.net/ from a long distance and you'll know if your firmware has issues.

If your download totally sucks, it's the firmware.

I had a SB6120 for about 3 days. Got fed up with Charters firmware and switched modems.

My speed on the 12/1 plan from 1000 miles away using a Zoom 5341 modem:

You are fine then. You don't have the bug like other areas do with speed over long distances and that firmware.

Sorry I may be out of the loop and I read the link sent by Dogg. But if your able to connect to the node closest to you then generally your modem is not the issue. Now congestion on the backbone that your connected to could be an issue but thats nothing that charter has control over. Not saying your wrong again I'm out of the loop, could you fill me in?

-EDIT- Scratch this, just did a little research, "low throughput due to large round trip delay" learn something new everyday...
