[Help] Belkin USB Wireless Adapter F9L1101v1 Connection Problem

Just recently bought the Belkin USB F9L1101v1 wireless adapter for my old Sony VAIO PCG-GR370 laptop (it's one of those with a wireless LAN card slot) before leaving on vacation overseas. The laptop's OS is Windows XP SP3.

I'm at the hotel trying to connect to their wi-fi, but having a problem. All the local wireless networks (and hotel's) come up on the "View Available Networks" list, but when I try to connect a pop-up comes up and says "Please wait while Windows connects to (network name) network." Below that, it says "Waiting for the network..." while a little bar below shows it's progress. What happens is that this pop-up just goes away after about a minute with no error message but yet it never connects.

The wireless adapter shows up in the network connections, but there's a red X over it, and says it's not connected. I'm sure the software was installed correctly before I left. Unfortunately, I can't give any technical specs about the hotel's router/modem because I don't know how to find that out. If anyone can help me out in hopefully solving this problem, I'd really appreciate it.
