[CenturyTel] After upgrading from 3 Mbit to 8 Mbit, speeds are s

Almost two weeks ago we decided to upgrade out internet speed from our original 3 Mb speed we purchased when DSL first became available in our area in 2007 to 10 Mb that was now available for the same price. The customer service rep notified us that we could get 8 Mb on our line so we ordered the upgrade. The upgrade did not happen on the day we were promised and we had to call them multiple times for the upgrade to finally come through. Since the upgrade "went through" we have had terrible speeds, with as low as .28 Mb download, but our upload speeds are where they are supposed to be. We have called tech support numerous times, and a tech was sent out to because they said that our SNR was to low. That was supposedly fixed but still no speed boost. I have also been told by tech support that there was a fiber cut in our area, then we were being subjected to bandwidth exhaust, they go on and on. According to one knowledgeable the modem was supposed to sync at 9550/896 for our purchased speed but that has yet to happen, and I don't see how bandwidth exhaust and fibers being cut would affect sync rate in the 10,800 foot distance to the CO. Here our the modems current stats:

WAN Port Statistics:
Link Status: Up
Upstream Speed: 894 kbps
Downstream Speed: 7560 kbps

Downstream Noise Margin

and out actual speeds:

This has become a huge annoyance, especially since 80% of the time our download is comparable to dial-up and as of writing this I'm download kodak software at 1.87 Kb/s........

This is direct from the modem or through a router? I fought a terrible download speed for a while and discovered it was my router bottlenecking not my DSL. Just something to try if you haven't.

This is through the modem, bypassing the router, and our speeds at 3 Mb were just fine, nothing changed in quality till we upgraded to a faster speed.

Just because Centurylink says it is "available" doesn't mean it's really "available" - you might want to go back to 3M

Well I thought of that, but my neighbor has a 5 Mb connection and always gets her speed. Her modem syncs at the correct speed of 5888 Kbps with an SNR of 13 db. Our connection varies from 7400 Kbps to 8200 Kbps with a variable SNR of between 5 db and 10 db. The lines are all of 13 years old, our neighbors are older, and both the neighbors lines and ours connect to the main line at the same box. So I think that it is totally possible to get 8 Mb, especially since I live in a rural area with few connections altogether compared to an urban area.

You need a technician to come out and do a line check. You should sync at the same rate and SNR every time the modem is rebooted. There is also the possibility you have a failing modem.

How is your wiring setup? Do you have a filter at the NID with a separate line to the modem? If not, do you have filters on EVERY phone jack (except for the modem jack)? Do you have phones in other locations (garage, barn)?

Yeah we have filters at tall phone line ports in the house, but we don't have a filter at the NID. I did a test of the modem at the NID itself to overrule a failing filter or other wiring issue within our home and I still got the same results as I did in the house. Are there any other signs that point to a failing modem? I've also called and they were supposed to send a tech to our house, but the tech never showed up and we were home all day that day.

another thought, maybe your modem is not capable of the increased speed. when i went from 3 to 12 my modem was only capable of 7, so had to get a new one.

Well I called Cenutrylink again, and got a really good customer rep and should have a technician out here tomorrow evening to test the lines and finally fix the issue, I hope...

Hi Jtopher,

Have you tried the CenturyLink speedtest sites?

e.g.: »spdtst-miam.fl.centurylink.net/

I'm having the exact same problem in Ohio, 10mbps service and 1-2Mbps download speeds from everything off of the CenturyLink network..however, i'm able to get 10Mbps to my local CenturyLink speedtest site.
