And figured I would give a try as it seemed really easy and I wanted a smartphone but not the bill that comes with having one on a contract carrier.
Well I went and bought the Nokia E71 at the local Wal Mart ($199.99) and bought the $45 month unlimited card, and then I found a iPhone 3G 16GB on Craigslist and bought that. Well..it actually works.
You need the SIM out of the ST Nokia phones (E71 or the 6970) and then you put the sim in the iPhone and you'll get voice and text to get 3G data working you have to go to that website in the how-to to set it up using WIFI on your iPhone.
But $45 month for unlimited voice/texting and data using AT&T coverage? Count me in. |

Shocking to say the least..I would be all over it. But that's me I guess I'll save the money instead of throwing it away for the same service on a contract with AT&T. |
|
 | Is it actually unlimited data? I used over 12 GB last month (mostly by tethering, do they allow that too?), and will probably use more this month.
Oops, just checked their website. I can live with no international calling (can use calling card etc), but cannot accept no international roaming. And I haven't found any prepaid service in the US that allows international roaming. While I might not like international roaming rates, having the option available is important to me. I travel out of the country at least 3 times a year. |

As far as tethering, its not supported, but I believe you can do it with a jailbroken iPhone.
Straight Talk does have international calling »www.straighttalkild.com/straight···talk.asp
Edit: That link doesn't seem to be working right, but if you look on their site, they do offer it for a extra fee. |

 | It is a loophole with Straight Talk, and I am pretty sure they know about it as well. How much longer it will last is anybody's guess. Another reason people are hesitant to try it is they have purchase and hold onto a $200 phone. |

How much longer it will last is anybody's guess. Another reason people are hesitant to try it is they have purchase and hold onto a $200 phone. True, true..BUT $45/month for unlimited (data is capped though) is a hell of a deal compared if you were to go to AT&T or Verizon directly. You can't even get that price if you got their 450/500 minute package.
From what I have read on that link in my OP is that ST's data cap per month is around 2GB, but some people have said they got past 2GB/month but I'd be afraid to because ST will straight up blacklist your SIM card and then your screwed. Unless you beg them to undo the ban.
But hell..$45/month for unlimited voice and text and 2GB data is hella deal if you ask me for a REAL smartphone like the iPhone and you get the coverage of AT&T. (I actually used 411 today and even that was powered by AT&T.)
So the upfront costs will pay for itself pretty quickly in your monthly costs.
I plan to buy ST's 6 month unlimited card on their site which comes to $125.99 (a discount price compared if you bought in store) That price alone is probably what you would pay AT&T for the same service plan in a single month.
Is there a risk of ST shutting down the ability to use a iPhone? Yes. But I sure will take advantage of the situation while I can. And if you check when that thread was made it was literally MONTHS ago, last year?
Edit: You can buy the Nokia E71 on Walmart.com cheaper than if you were to go to the store itself, at the store its $199.99 on the site its $169.00 »www.walmart.com/ip/Straight-Talk···ications |

How many people are going to buy a Nokia phone and an iPhone to get a better deal on monthly service?
The Nokia was $200 and a new iPhone can cost up to $900. A used iPhone is a crapshoot when bought from ebay or craigslist. That's going to cost a lot of upfront money many people can't afford just to save about $15 monthly from their phone bill. Some carriers are charging only $60 monthly for what they call unlimited everything. Just bring a phone with a sim card.
Besides, not everyone wants an iphone, including me. I agree that if you go to ATT with your iphone they will rape you with all of their charges and the monthly bill with the $45 data charge. But ATT is offering the first gen iphone for as low as $19 for existing customers with a 2 year contract. |

Me? And obviously ALOT of other people.
quote: The Nokia was $200
Its $200 in store, $169 on website. And yes it is a little up front costs but it beats getting stuck paying what you would if you went to AT&T or Verizon directly. Go price compare the same plan and get back to me if it even comes close to $45/month (not sure where you got $15 savings?)
quote: and a new iPhone can cost up to $900.
lol $900? Where you getting these prices? A unlocked iPhone 4 32GB probably ain't even that high used.
quote: A used iPhone is a crapshoot when bought from ebay or craigslist.
Not if you buy from a trusted seller on eBay, and if you buy on Craigslist, you get to test the product before you buy.
quote: That's going to cost a lot of upfront money many people can't afford just to save about $15 monthly from their phone bill.
I never did say it was going to be cheap upfront, but it pays for itself over time pretty damn quickly. And again--where you getting only $15 in savings? Go screen grab a AT&T/Verizon monthly price (On top of possibly having to put down a multi hundred dollar deposit, PLUS an ETF.)
quote: Some carriers are charging only $60 monthly for what they call unlimited everything. Just bring a phone with a sim card.
1.) What "some carriers" would this be?
2.) Yea buy the phone outright which will come out to about the same price as you would setting up a Straight Talk account with the iPhone of choice.
quote: Besides, not everyone wants an iphone, including me.
Then why bother replying to the thread in the first place? And if you actually read the thread in my OP its not just limited to the iPhone.

First gen iPhone? What? lol AT&T sells only the iPhone 3GS and 4, and as far as I'm aware they sell the 3GS 8GB for $49.99. And yet again..you get stuck in a pricy contract with a lower level of service options. |

That's all you have to say for everything you quoted from me? As far as your screen grab goes, what iPhone is that? Not that it matters anyway because what I have been trying to tell you is that staying in a high priced contract with AT&T for 2 years is retarded as you get the EXACT same service as I do using Straight Talk WITH unlimited text and voice for ALOT cheaper. You still haven't replied back with a answer to that. |

I bought a NiB iPhone from Ebay the week before, only to find out today that Apple are now offering unlocked iPhones in the US today for cheaper than they were going for on Ebay. (not much cheaper when you include tax that Apple will charge but cheaper still).
I had been with VZ for years but when I looked at the cost to get an iPhone with them it was $200, locked into a 2 year contract with $80 a month and that did not include unlimited minutes, "unlimited data" or unlimited txt msgs. With ST I'd be saving 35 a month minimum and save even more on overages, txts, 'regulatory and admin fees", taxes, 411, etc. versus VZ.
I decided to port my VZ number to Google Voice(Grand Central) instead of ST so that if things went bad with ST I could easily get another carrier immediately (prepaid or not) and have my phone number working right away. And if that ever happened I could then sell an unlocked iPhone on ebay.
For international travel I plan on getting a SIM in the country I travel to and using the unlocked iPhone then.
It's only been a week since I got the phone and ST and 1 day since porting to Google Voice but so far all is well. A few complaints about Google Voice (lack of MMS for one) but no complaints about ST. It is flexible and the cost savings make trying it a no brainer for me -- Mission Accomplished |

I can't say I travel outside of the U.S so I could be wrong but I do know Straight Talk offers a international calling plan for an extra fee. I'm pretty sure it would work the same as it would on a regular Straight Talk phone like the Nokia E71 as you are getting the same level of service on the iPhone as any ST phone. |

I don't know how that works because I don't need that feature. I wish I did as that would mean I would actually get out of this hell hole once in awhile. |

Verizon is CDMA, AT&T=GSM. CDMA phones don't use SIM cards, having the ability to use SIM cards is why people can switch phones so easily. |

For me AT&T is the best provider in the area. Verizon is worse than Sprint here. |
