Funny

Gotta love government-built and managed Internet.

The real internet was originally government built, and ultimate authority still rests with the U.S. Dep't of Commerce.

»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARPANET Not an Al Gore comment. The Internet was created LONG before him.

And actually the only thing the US DoC has say so over is the DNS Root. The Internet actually is NOT governed by them. Instead its done by ICANN: »icann.org/en/about/ It's independent of the gov't and a non-profit.

And ICANN operates under a contract from the DoC, that must be renewed every few years.

But he did take the legislative initiative to open up the Arpanet to public access for commercial ends.

Ummm.. Not any more, the internets been golbal for years. If we where to shut it dow by say - trying to remoe the top level domains or something, someone else could make their own i-Cann variant and do their own names lists, etc and it would be back up in almost no time... There is just too much money to be made on the net, therefore it would not stay dead even if our government wanted to - it would have to resort to measures that would harm even its own interests.
