[Skype] Skype protocol cracked by Russian hacker

A researcher named Efim Bushmanov claims to have reverse engineered the Skype protocol.
“My aim is to make Skype open source,” he said in a blog post ( »nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2011/06···s-next/? ) on Thursday, which included links to download executable files compatible with Skype versions 1.4, 3.8, and 4.1, plus IDA Pro disassembly database files, and source code.
We spoke with Chris Sather, Product Management for Network Defense at McAfee about McAfee’s next generation firewalls that analyze relationships and not protocols.

Bushmanov said he decided to publicize his efforts in the wake of a story published this week in the , detailing how Middle Eastern countries’ security agencies possessed tools that enabled them to eavesdrop on Skype communications. He’s also hoping to recruit more people to help him finish the Skype reverse engineering, which he says isn’t yet complete.

He may be good at writing code, but boy he missed the mother lode.

As noted in the WSJ article, the Skype eavesdropping involved bugging computers the old fashioned way, to pick up the speaker and microphone feeds. Skype itself was NOT breached.

What is the point of making an already free app open-source?

... so that Skype can be more fully understood, you can login to Skype on more devices using third-party software, and even third-party software can communicate with Skype.

To be specific, when you say "open source", in this case, you refer to the protocol rather than the application.

I am just curious where did you get such a notion that Skype is an open-source, especially its protocol. Can you provide the links to support your statement?

don't and stop are the ONLY two 4-letter words considered offensive to men, but not when used together.

Thanks XP1 and gweidenh for answering and elucidating my question.

Wouldn't Skype benefit from allowing 3rd party apps to connect to its network?

Rightly or wrongly, they think not....

Just as PC's could be built by many companies, but if you wanted a Mac it had to come from Apple....

Different business approaches.

Skype has certainly built up a big brand name. They could even (one day) be in danger of losing their trademark, if it comes into more and more common use as a noun and verb!

Xerox and Coke, through heavy fighting are still trademarks, but you know that people use the terms quite generically.

Skype has a great name and huge customer base. Their challenges will be getting more PAYING customers and more BUSINESS customers (much overlap there).

Most Skype customers pay nothing. We all know how companies love non-paying customers, how profitable non-paying customers are...

SecureSkype would be an opensource project i'd look forward to seeing sometime in the future (if ever) or anything similar.

If this is true, I don't think there's any way Microsoft will be embracing it. Sadly, they'll probably be under a lot of pressure to get out a new version to 'break' the protocol preventing interoperability.

It would be risky and draw attention to Skype's 'fork', but..... MS investors didn't pay 8.5b for Skype to become an open node.
