| Afraid of Google? Why are the networks so afraid of Google, they make no tv shows, they own no broadcast networks, My TV with GoogleTV attached still plays the same commercials, i can skip them with my current DVR, I can go online to HULU with my pc hooked up to my PC.
This box offers nothing different than a pc/tv solution other than ease of use. More use = more viewers = more ad dollars.
/shrug i dont get it, all the big networks afraid of a little box. |

Google is already a monopolist on ad revenue for the internet. And Google is trying to dominate the ad business on broadcast TV as well.
It isn't just the TV networks that are afraid of losing their income stream. The ad agencies are afraid of a monopolist Google setting rates they will have to live with as well. losing huge portions of their income. Both groups will fight Google to the death to stop them. They may very well lose that battle. But they aren't going down without a fight. -- Take poll on how you will vote on Nov 2nd

Sure they may be the most successful and may have caused prices to go down but .... Isnt this just the 'free market' at work?

That was also true of Microsoft, yet the gov't went after them with a vengeance for being a monopoly. Google's domination of the internet ad market qualifies as a monopoly.

 | Microsoft had something Google doesn't have: Lock-in. Switching from Windows to MacOS was tough. You had to retrain staff, find/buy new programs to replace your Windows programs, etc. Microsoft used that lock-in to pressure PC manufacturers. "You won't install FireFox onto your Dell PCs or we won't let you use Windows. Just try selling your PCs without Windows!"
Google, meanwhile, has little to no lock-in. People stay because they like the product. If a company released a better search engine tomorrow, people would flock there instead and Google would lose dominance.
I haven't heard of any instances of Google using its dominant position to keep people from using competitors. (Yahoo and Bing are still around last I checked.) Remember, having a monopoly isn't illegal. Using that monopoly to subdue any potential competitors is illegal. -- -Jason Levine |

I think OEMs also had to pay MS for units sold without windows installed during that whole locked in contracts phase that got them under the anal probe of the government. so either way Dell had to pay MS. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |
