Clear Professional

I've been reading about the Clear throttling of users down to .25kbps. I've been searching for an ISP for my business and trying my Clear modem at my office for about 6 weeks. It works awesome. I get ~8m down and near 1m up.

My DSL here is painfully slow at 1mps.

My questions are this:

1) I'm thinking of dumping my DSL for Clear Pro but would like to know if it is also throttled at the 7gig cap.

2) Anyone have experience with their VOIP service?

Thanks.

If you are looking for a voip, look at ooma. It's the best deal for voip i have ever used.

My service was great for the first three months, then I got capped for like a week straight and I dumped them.

The funny thing is that I dumped att dsl 6mbps which was super reliable for Clear, but now I have comcast (12month promo) and it's been pretty fast, much better than clear.

I tried to get ooma and vonage to work on clear. It kept cutting out.
With the new cap I bet its impossible.

there was a discussion on clear intentionally preventing voip services to work since they offer it as a service. check the other threads, as well as the forums on the clear site.

Yes this month of service when I still had clear they blocked my ooma service; however they also blocked all vpns once i was managed, and ooma uses a vpn type of connection

If you need a good voip get ooma, a lot cheaper than vonage; even free if you don't want all the extras...

CLEAR regular or pro is the same service, only thing with the pro they will send you an email to notify you service will be crap tell they fix the connection. same service, same speed, and same bs.

If DSL is all you can get KEEP IT!

I specifically asked if there was any plan at all that Clear offers that was not subject to "tower equalization" or whatever they called it. I never really got a straight answer, but I'm pretty sure the gist of it was that every plan is subject to being capped.

Save your money for a better provider.

You should definitely not dump any DSL service for Clear. If you think that 1 Mbps DSL is slow, wait until you experince .25 Mbps Clear. If you're getting good speeds with Clear, go ahead and ride them out until you get throttled, but keep DSL as a backup.

I would recommend you search for an independent wireless internet service provider if you really need more bandwidth than DSL is able to provide.

Many people are still stuck with .25Mbps-.5Mbps intermittent DSL as the only other option, which is nearly equally poor to throttled Clear.

Ok, I stand corrected. My DSL was rock solid for 7 years, although at 1.5 Mbps. I tried Clear for two months and was very pleased, being able to stream HD Netflix and download my games off Steam really quickly, so I cancelled DSL. Shortly after I cancelled DSL, the throttling started, down to 1/6 of the speed I was getting with my slow DSL, so I cancelled clear and went back.

I will have to say that Clear was very reliable, the connection was pretty much always there. If you're stuck with .25 to .5 Mbps DSL that is not reliable, Clear would be a definite upgrade. I see signs that they're easing up on the throttling of users, so it may be an even bigger bargain if that's the case. I am back on DSL for the moment, but I'm looking into an independent WISP that operates in my small town, they promise 8/1 dedicated bandwidth for $50 a month. I'll keep my DSL as a backup from now, though, especially since it's only $15 a month for the year then bumping up to $20, which is still reasonable. If the WISP doesn't work out, I'll probably go with the Sprint 4G Desktop Modem plan, I understand that they have never throttled users, and they use the same towers, so it would be just like the first few months of Clear for me.
