[Rant] I am so fed up with phone tech assholes

That refuse to replace a defective device just because you use Linux. Yes, I am talking to AT&T who gave me the lame excuse they can't diagnose it and assume I am a total moron who can't diagnose my own hardware failure. Let's see, my laptop card fails to read device ID upon being plugged in. It has worked for 2 months with the same driver. As they were told, another Linux PC with a different driver version that has always worked also shows the same failure when the dmesg is read and the failure in the usb subsystem shows. These idiots are crooks and I will never deal with them again. I guess the only thing to do is get an ETF on service to this card they won't fucking replace and then take them to court and argue why I shouldn't pay it. Fuck AT&T!!!

Does it say anywhere in the contract or support documentation that they only support Windows, or DONT support Linux? If not, you need a supervisor.

Why would you call wanting tech support on an OS they don't support?

Stated clearly here: »www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-···u4380265 or »www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-···u4170225

No it does not. They refuse to escalate and say that the problem needs diagnosing. Yet, they say they don't diagnose Linux. I guess they could fall back on the fact none of the cards ever claim compatibility with Linux(like most computer accessories). Any good way to reach a supervisor. I got 1 1/2 year contract left on this card and AT&T phone reps refuse just to give me a freakin simple warranty exchange. Maybe I should just check if I have insurance on it and just demolish the piece of shit.

Yah, no room to complain there if they clearly state that they arent going to support you..

So, what to do? A reasonable solution? You guys don't seem to get that I have an obvious hardware failure, not a software failure. Does that exempt them from standing behind their hardware? Bullshit!

It gives AT&T the right to not diagnose anything over any un-supported OS. How is it "obvious" to somebody on the other end of a phone?

It could be a driver failure for all you think you know.

You're using their device on an unsupported OS, this probably voids their ToS or something.

The failure occurs before the driver even loads, as I explained to them. The failure is a read failure on the device ID, as in the device ID is requested, but the device no longer replies. Also, on 2 different driver versions that both worked previously, on 2 different laptops? Boy, what a coincidence. I also explained this to them.

I'm sure since you're so technically able, try it on a supported OS and see what happens. Then if it doesn't work, call them back.

I feel your pain, but, that's what you (apparently) agreed-to. Kinda like the rant another forum-area about someone that hates apple, hates iTunes, and hates his iPhone because he JailBroke it, and now it's not working..
Company says "this is what we will support"
Customer says "but i'm going to do it my way"
Customer has no room to complain when something goes wrong and they get no support!...

at least in your case you could hook it up to a friends Windows machine and jump thru the hoops they want you to, no?

Maybe at work. I don't run any Windows machines at home, or on any laptop. I have been MS free for a long time and don't intend to go back to that inferior OS just to please people who can hardly speak English. I mean, just because they can't determine whether it's a hardware failure over the phone shouldn't make them assume I'm stupid or something. They should take the device back and then determine it their way. What happened to "the customer is always right"? AT&T's moto is how much can we annoy the customer today?

For most companies, that page was torn from the support-book long ago.. right around the same time they out-sourced their support..

Well, if they can't support me, then why should I be obligated to the 2 year contract? On a device that doesn't work, period. I have been a Linux user since the 90s, back when you actually had to build you own system, mostly from source code. I am very familiar with the subsystem in question. There is no question that the problem is a hardware failure. I don't expect AT&T to support my OS or any diagnostic procedure whatsoever. I just expect them to make good on a defective product they sold me. The OS should not matter, as to my rights to return something that has a defect in materials or workmanship.

Return periods are usually 15 or 30 days.

It's not their fault you didn't read the Supported OS section of their hardware.

It's like buying a video game that your computer can't run. You expect to get a refund on an opened piece of software after the return period?

That's why long ago I simply booted into windows, let the monkeys do their thing and get the thing RMAd.

Have you gone to an AT&T store to see if they will do anyting there?

BTW no need to "run" windows, simply setup a drive with it so you can boot it to please the monkeys.

Yah. Try that. Let us know how it goes taking a multi-million dollar company to court for not supporting something they said they didn't support to begin with. You say you're tired of phone tech assholes but maybe you should evaluate your attitude and read what you sign before agreeing to terms of service before blasting someone for doing their job properly.

I am done with this thread. I don't see why there are so many shills here defending a company that won't stand behind their defective merchandise. The warranty says one year against defects in materials and workmanship. Nowhere does it say "as long as you run Windows" in that warranty. Nor was I(for the last time) asking for any troubleshooting help, thus not asking them to support Linux. Does any of this change the fact that a company fails to honor its warranty? Does me plugging the defective dongle into Windows somehow make it less defective? All of these responses seem to try to mask the real issue. btw, for the Linux haters, I have borrowed a different dongle(same model) and put in my SIM card. Guess what? I am typing from it right now. Yes, it connected instantly!

How do they know it's defective? Because you said so? I've done phone and desktop support for the past 13 years. I've heard plenty of people tell me stuff's broke when it isn't.

Take it to the AT&T store in Great Barrington, and have them plug it in there. If it doesn't work, I'm sure they'll help you out.

I never heard the part where AT&T diagnosed the problem and failed to replace the defective part ... sounds like they never got to that step because you insist on running an unsupported configuration.

Sounds like self-inflicted pain.
