 | I think the Heisman Trust gave Reggie the option: Give it back with this very nice and thoughtful statement which will minimize the embarrassment, or we'll have to strip it from you in a rather embarrassing manner.
I too think its ridiculous.
Also, USC continues to erase the existence of #5...

quote: During a Monday morning interview with Hannah Storm on ESPN's SportsCenter, Young said he wouldn't turn down the trophy if Bush lost it.
"I definitely want it, I definitely want it,'' said Young, who guided Texas to the national championship. "But he won it fair and square definitely, and it's much respect to Reggie, man. He had a great career and he's already won a Super Bowl before me. I'm already mad about that.
"But at the same time I am definitely happy for him, man, and he is definitely the Heisman Trophy winner for that year. But if they send it over to me I am not going to say no to it," Young said.

Eagles LoveRDawkins is a true EaglePremium join:2001-11-29 Trenton, NJ | reply to aztecnology Regardless of what happened.. Reggie still deserves that Heisman.. He is arguably the best RB to have ever played at the college rank.. He was considered once in a decade type of talent.. And to this day there is not another player who can be compared to Reggie in the college ranks.. He was pure magic.. He still deserves that Heisman -- "I done wrassled with an alligator, I done tussled with a whale, only Last week I murdered a rock, Injured a stone, hospitalized a brick, I'm so mean I make medicine sick!!"-Ali |

Eagles LoveRDawkins is a true EaglePremium join:2001-11-29 Trenton, NJ | reply to aztecnology It's BS.. The man earned it.. Regardless of off the football field issues there was between him and USC the man earned that.. "integrity" suggests there is more to the spirit of this trophy than only recognition of superior athletic achievement. |

 | reply to Eagles LoveR That may true but if he was caught when he was.in college he would have kicked off the team. That would have disqualified him playing college football. Since he would have not been qualified to play he would not received the the award. Their going to be some players kicked off teams this year for rules violations. One player already been kicked off the team. He does not deserve the award. -- Caddy |

Agreed, and IMO it shows a lack of integrity on his part that he did not return it long before now. He cheated, then he kept covering it up right up to the end.
Anyone watch SC yesterday and their discussion about Jeter's acting job to get walked? He acted like he was hit by a pitch even though he clearly wasn't, so he intentionally calculated a cheat in order to win a game. All of the folks they interviewed (former players of one sport or another) admitted to cheating and said it was all part of the game. They felt that if you could get away with it and could rationalize a positive outcome for you or your team (your cheating helped your team win, you win an award, etc), it was the "right" thing to do.

They felt that if you could get away with it and could rationalize a positive outcome for you or your team (your cheating helped your team win, you win an award, etc), it was the "right" thing to do. Our society is so messed up. I thought about creating a topic regarding this, but for me it would be a total homer move. I was livid beyond words when I saw it unfold, but that soon turned to relief when the Rays won despite Jeter's Oscar-worth performance. I believe Gary Shelton of the St. Pete Times covers what I feel now the best: quote: With a lesser player, perhaps this would seem like a lesser transgression.
If Derek Jeter was just another guy playing just another game, just another guy in a dirty uniform scrapping away, perhaps this would seem like nothing at all. It would be a case of boys being boys. It would be someone trying to find a edge. It would be, well, baseball.
Ah, but this is Jeter the elegant, Jeter the dignified, Jeter the regal. Jeter has spent his entire career above the mess and beyond reproach. He has been the most admired man in his sport, carrying himself with a uncommon class that even the fans of his rivals could not help but admire. It is permissible to detest the Yankees, but who has ever had a bad word to say about Jeter?
Until now.
