According to this article Stats Can is reporting new truck sales accounted for 56.8 per cent of total new auto sales. This is the the largest proportion reported since Statistics Canada began keeping records of new car sales....
So any Canchatters buy a new auto?
I'm still using my 2000 Chevy Impala as my daily driver... Too reliable to trade in yet.... |

The EPlease allow me to retortPremium join:2002-05-26 Burnaby, BC | We just purchased a new compact/sub compact car, but boy I'd like to pick up a pick-up right about now!
I'm pretty sure the reason truck sales have exploded is due to the massive price cuts that the manufacturers have been offering. We could easily save $10,000.00 + off a new loaded F150. That's pretty substantial!
I can't justify the fuel economy hit that comes with driving a pick-up though. If I did a lot of highway miles it might not be so bad. But city driving equals some pretty ugly fuel economy. -- "All opinions stated by me are solely my views and do not reflect the views of my employer, this site, or even myself depending on my level of sanity at the moment" |

I was told my 2nd car would trade in for 3 times as much for a truck than it would for a car. |

We'd love to get a truck so that we can pull a trailer for camping, but we just can't justify it. It's too bad considering the deals available.
>I still like Sport-Tracs.... they're cool little trucklets. At 34K, it's actually worth it. -- "All opinions stated by me are solely my views and do not reflect the views of my employer, this site, or even myself depending on my level of sanity at the moment" |

| reply to Tikker_LoS I don't get it, why would you buy an Explorer with the back chopped off? Why not just get a King Cab Pickup truck? Yes the pickup is bigger, but I never understood the appeal of the sport trac.

Probably for the same reason people buy compact trucks like the Nissan Frontier Crew Cab.... a blend of SUV and compact pick up. It's just the right fit for some....and personally, i think its a nice looking (although getting dated) machine. -- "All opinions stated by me are solely my views and do not reflect the views of my employer, this site, or even myself depending on my level of sanity at the moment" |

(And I'm a Toyota guy for the record) But I agree; If I'm looking for a truck because I want to haul, pull, etc..... I'd choose the Ford over the Toyota, hands down. The specs are way better for the Ford. |

Trucks ain't cool, no matter how hard the marketing departments tell you they are. They only exception would be a 1930s/40s/50s truck in pristine condition. Otherwise, unless they are purchased and used for work, they are a male menopausemobile like a Monte Carlo was in the 70s.
Let's get the price of gasoline up again and see what happens to all the big pickups and SUVs that people have purchased in this rush of the past few months. -- The thoughts expressed in the above post are those of the poster, and can only be attributed to his state of mind at the time of posting. | reply to vue666 Why would anyone want to drive around in such a behemoth unless your job required you to haul lots of heavy stuff?
As a commuter vehicle to an office job? Why? Just buy a Smart-Car and attach a huge paper mache penis to the grill - if that's the message you want to convey. |

However, some folks just seem to be "truck people", plain and simple. Good for them if they have the money to pay the fuel bills and make up for the added pollution in other ways. Sometimes you just need a truck though.... living in very rural areas, farms, and if you pull/haul recreational vehicles.

KardinalDei Gratia ReginaPremium join:2001-02-04 N of 49th | reply to vue666 Posts slamming Toyota...again....I'm just shocked. I suppose any excuse will do when the vitriol is so abundant and the only real surprise was that they took this long to come out in a "car" thread.
Meanwhile, the 2000 Impala has had recalls for the following:
1) an engine oil leak on a manifold while braking (possible fire) 2) fuel regulators on certain engines could cause fuel to enter the manifold through a vacuum line 3) fuel line severing during a frontal crash 4) driver air bag deployment mechanism malfunction 5) faulty seatbelt assemblies (malfunction during crash)
OEM / replacement parts including steering knuckles, steering shafts, and fuel system relief valves all have recalls as well.
It looks like GM has poor engine designs that like to have combustion not just in the chamber but all over the engine bay. It must be to make up for the lousy headlight designs they've had over the years, so that the owners can see at night.
Rust or mechanical issues -- I've never heard of a car/truck that has never had recall problems. I do find that some posters here really like to point the finger at some brands/countries of origin and say "See? They suck - buy American cuz they're better" no matter what. -- The thoughts expressed in the above post are those of the poster, and can only be attributed to his state of mind at the time of posting.
