| evolving consumer habits the couch potato syndrome that used to happen during the first two waves of (moving) video in the home (pre-digital, for the most part) had millions of consumers addicted to the product. consumers are in the process of evolving with the multitude of choices for delivery of content which competes for consumer's attention. cable-tv's take it or leave it blocks of channels are getting attacked on all sides from free alternatives. the internet as the medium of transport and wired/wireless utilization will put cable-tv as we know it onto the ash heaps of history.
pricing, value and competition are more important every day as a tech savvy consumer says I've got choices.. to the providers.. some of you also say, I don't watch all that much tv, so I can "DOWNLOAD" the parts I want and NOT SUBSCRIBE to the rest. one can successfully argue that you don't need to be as technology literate as you did even 5 years ago and the broadband access is around millions more consumers. along comes google tv, apple tv ver 3.0, and other alternatives which now STREAM content via ethernet, wifi or other wireless tech. competition for the old set-top $$ RENTAL $$ boxes are being challenged by the internet. If a tv experience can happen from the internet for PENNIES instead of $$ HUNDREDS $$ of dollars, the cable-tv industry is due for a course correction of it's business model.
IMO, the cable-tv industry is losing consumers under 25 and may never get them back. a generation which feels entitled to virtually free entertainment. |

I agree . . . the cableTV companies are on the road to suffering the same issues of elimination of the land-line POTS in favor of cell phones. The only way they will retain or acquire youngsters is a huge revamp of offerings via ala-carte coupled with tremendously discounted prices. -- The Rules of Spam |

Im 25 years old, and have a cable bill that would make most eyes pop out, and I refuse to give it up. Online viewing sucks! Give me a remote and 300 channels to surf through and Ill find something Im interested in and possibly discover something new. Kind of hard to channel surf and accidently stumble upon something when theres no channels to surf through. I was flipping through the channels last week and landed on one of the HBOs and saw a preview for their new original series, Boardwalk Empire. It looks friggen awesome. I would have no idea about the show if I relied only on stupid online TV viewing. There are very few channels I have that I dont find value in.
Im a huge South park fan, I still remember watching the first episode live when I was 13 back in August 97. I dont know why but Ive slacked off the past few seasons, Im now in the process of catching up, I know every single South Park episode is available for free on southparkstudios.com, but I set my DVR to record every instance of South Park and Ill watch the repeats on TV and catch up that way. Watching TV online blows. Plus theres the whole issue of sports. -- 9 Years Ago We Were Attacked By Terrorists, Now We Have One In The White House! Save America, Remove Hussein Obama From Office!

Steve MehsGun Control Is Using A Steady HandPremium join:2005-07-16 | reply to Eek2121 That is exactly what's wrong with people. YouTube, let's see, crappy low rez Flash video, no actual real content due to copyrights, 10 minute limit. YouTube is okay for dicking around, but that's about it. How anyone can honestly say that shit is of any quality is beyond me. |

Steve MehsGun Control Is Using A Steady HandPremium join:2005-07-16 | Why would I want to watch TV on my computer when I have a 42" HDTV and a 55" HDTV to choose from? Why would I want to pay $2-4 a movie when Redbox and/or an HBO subscription are a better value and provide more content? Do these movies contain Dolby 5.1, 7.1 or DTS 5.1 audio tracks? And in comparing quality, sorry iTunes kicks any so called high def content from YouTube.
I never saw the YouTube store before, must not be getting much press which means it's not worth anything. The whole interface is piss poor and selection is limited. YouTube will always be a place to post videos of drunken stupidness and for angry hormonal teenagers rant about something idiotic and expect others to care. Nothing about YouTube says quality.
I can't watch live NFL Football, NHL Hockey, MLB Baseball, NCAA Football or NASCAR events on YouTube, No SportsCenter, can't get 24/7 news coverage from Fox News and Fox Business. I'm a big TV guy and YouTube is pure shit for serious watching. Nothing beats a TV, a remote control and hundreds of channels of content ready to be easily discovered. -- 9 Years Ago We Were Attacked By Terrorists, Now We Have One In The White House! Verizon sucks in signature. All the TWC services listed. Could we have a Time Warner Cable EMPLOYEE here? |

Sit on the sofa and watch TV on the computer - it's even better than normal TV - I have full DVR, Netflix, Internet Video and web browsing at my fingertips. The remote even doubles as a mouse when necessary. |

I wish I worked for them, but no I don't, Verizon however is the spawn of Satan, they are the worst company around, with the most overrated services around.

I see no correlation between AOL and the pay TV industry.

And how do you discover new content, watch live sports, watch live news? Netflix doesn't offer streaming for everything, Hulu is a joke and personally, every time I would want to watch something I wouldn't want to have the annoyance of starting out in a windowed view only to have to click the Enlarge button so the video takes up the whole screen. I fail to see how this is better than pay TV. Sorry honey cant watch CSI for another hour, have to wait for it to finish downloading.
