Got some LED bulbs, they are better than I thought ...

Lowes is selling dimmable LED bulbs in 40 watt versions for about $22. You can get a mover kit free from the post office that takes 10% off, and drops the cost to $20 per bulb.

They dim nicely, but keep a full spectrum white color even when dimmed. I have replaced a few 60 watt incandescent bulbs with the 40 watt LED bulbs in ceiling fans, and overall the light and overall aesthetic are very good. Over time I will buy more.

Also 65 watt LED flood lights have been put on clearance at my local Lowes for $23 a piece down from $59 or $69. The LED flood lights are a bit more directional, but also provide a very nice white. They don't dim.

LED lights at current prices will likely never recoup the extra cost over CFL... even taking into account the (supposedly) 100,000hrs life vs 7,000 for the $1 CFL.

I don't want a mercury time bomb in my home. Also CFL's go on and off, supposedly this has an adverse affect that varies considerably from individual to individual. From personal experience I know CFL also generates RF interference that causes trouble with my X10 network.

Half the bulbs in my home are on dimmers, many are automatic. A dimmable CFL bulb isn't $1 in my experience. Also the white from the LED bulbs I got at Lowes is IMO a more pure white than the CFL bulb I tried for $1.49.

Haven't replaced any in my house in 2yrs since I installed them. At the previous place I only replaced 2 in about 4-5 years (and they were getting at least 4-5hrs of use every day).

My experience with LED's with my X10 is that they pulse with the X10 signal. So, even though the light is off, you get a bleed-through pulse. Very annoying for an end table lamp next to the bed.

Movers kit hasn't contained the 20% coupon for a long time almost everywhere based on reports. It doesn't hurt to check, but unless your post office has some really old stock it likely isn't going to have anything. They've switched mainly to an electronic form for recent versions.

I picked up 2 movers kits recently both had a 10% off Lowes and 10% off BestBuy. The Lowes was 10% off sale and clearance items, but didn't discount extended warranties or installations.

If you're routinely eating CFLs it can be an issue.. otherwise the amount of mercury is about the same as in 20lbs of fish...YAWN.

Maybe really crappy ones.

That's your problem, dimmers are worthless in my book. For most people normal switches work fine - you want light or you want dark...

I think he put a comma instead of a full stop there.

7.000 is more like it.

Fine and good, but where did you get them for $1?

I don't see it as a problem that the OP wants some in-between. You have no idea what their setup is like or what activities they do. The lights in my office dim when i'm watching movies or editing. Sometimes I don't want full brightness when i'm reading or doing some other activity. Having dimmers isn't a 'problem'.

My Father recently bought and refurbished a house out in LA, equipped it nearly completely with LEDs, and they looked gorgeous. All dimmable, and either a soft white or bright white. Either way they looked fantastic.

Walmart or Home Depot in "pro" packs.

CFLs just five years ago were $6.5 a pop. Everybody said they wouldn't recoup the extra cost over their lifetime.

In another five years, you can get LED bulbs at the local Dollar General.

I've tried CFL and LED, in my book LED is the clear winner. Once these scale to 60, 75 and 100 watts they'll be my replacement bulb of choice.

I guess which bulb to get varies by each individual. Bringing mercury bulbs into my home scores up there with using lead paint on the walls.

Is that the one made by Feit. I was going to get it. What kind of fixture is it in, ceiling, table lamp? Is the coverage sufficient for your application. The LED lamps have an angle of illumination compared to the standard incandescent lamp.

Be careful with crystal glasses then, they have some 24% lead in them...

To each his own and everything, but the amount of mercury you're talking about here is minuscule.

I think "mercury bomb" is being a bit dramatic.

Your parents made it through okay, right...or at least, they weren't killed by CFL mercury poisoning? Maybe a little too much koolaid

It is a Sylvania bulb, they have 2 types at about the same price. One is dimmable the other not. I bought the dimmable bulb. The box says Sylvania Ultra Performance Series LED (TM).

The model number is LED8A19/G2 it fits in a standard bulb socket. I am not an electrician but think its called A19. I replaced a standard 60 watt bulb with this 40 watt bulb in my kitchen ceiling fan. I'm going to gradually replace them.

I like that when dimmed the LED still holds it's whiteness, the incandescent bulbs become a sort of orange / amber, particularly at lower power levels (low dim).

The box says 430 lumens and 50,000 hour lifetime. It also says soft white 3,000K. I assume that refers somehow to the type of light frequency emitted. My Kill-O-Watt meter records it as using 5 watts when installed in an on off table lamp (no dim). That may be a failure of the accuracy of the Kill-O-Watt or a power factor issue or some such. The box claims it needs 8 watts. It also claims a standard incandescent bulb will provide 470 lumens of light. This is about 40 lumens less (about 10%). However the bulb only shines around a bit more than half a semi-sphere area, while my incandescent bulb glows over almost a 360 area. In the ceiling fan, for the work areas illuminated, this bulb seems to do well enough. I'd prefer a 60 watt version, but this isn't half bad.

Well, I was brought up with the mercury time bombs in the several thermometers we had around the house.

Our family got away unscathed, and I figure we can with the CFLs as well.
