 | reply to stillrunnin Believe it or not, Macy's has some great prices when they do their sales which are usually on holidays. Probably one going on now. I had my eye on a $3000+ Sterns & Foster mattress for quite some time and got it for $1500 last Thanksgiving sale which included free delivery/setup/remove old mattress. (Did take 3 weeks.) Best mattress I've ever had.
I've found warranties are often a good judge of quality - 5 years, junk - 10 years so-so. The 15-20 year warranties are where I want to be.
Comparison shopping is almost impossible with most brands. The same model is usually sold under dozens of different names and the manufacturer tries to spread them out in each market. Trying to find a "Serta Nightbreeze" mattress that one store has at another local store often is impossible. Of course, that other store has the same exact mattress under the "Serta Springtime" name.
It's a racket. |

Myself I can sleep on anything anywhere, working night work for 9 years then doing OTR truck driving will do that to you. My bed was second hand for $50 and I had it for 10 years now, its a little saggy and might replace it soon. Don't know if I can see spending $1000+. My wifes bed when I met her was nothing but a foam pad. We slept fine on it.
The link about Consumer Reports sounds reasonably good with its facts. I haven't bought much at Ikea, always thought of it as a good store if your tight on space. -- "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace." -Jimi Hendrix |

1 edit | reply to stillrunnin I just went mattress shopping. All the mattresses at Ikea were garbage, they were all very thin and you could tell from a few seconds laying on them they just compacted very easily. I would not buy them unless you are very, very strapped for cash (in that case an inflatable bed would be better). Except a few uniquely designed pieces of furniture Ikea was horrible experience for me. It was more ghetto than walmart. The crowd of ghetto people gave me a feeling of being in a haunted house, but actually scary.
Anyways I ended up buying a spring mattress and box spring from Ashley Furniture with a few inches of memory foam built into the top for about $600. (This was not the cheapest, it was like midrange in their prices) (That is $100 a year for 6 years) The mattress is very comfortable, I cannot see why anyone would buy one for $1000 let alone $2000.
I went everywhere and found Ashley to be the best on prices and quality. I ended up buying a black vinyl couch (with a queen couch bed/mattress), a sleigh queen bed, and the queen mattress/box spring for the price of just a mattress and bed at other furniture stores.
You should definately shop around like I did with a notebook and get them to price match each other on comparable items. I got ashley to give me 10% off their price (which was better than others). You could probably try to ask for even more off. -- Your behavior is inconsistent with your desire to be treated like everyone else. |

| reply to stillrunnin $429.00 for a twin sultan HJELMAS latex pillowtop mattress?? That is way too much.
Before you buy that stop at ashley furniture and a few other places. You can surely find a much better twin mattress for $400-500. -- Your behavior is inconsistent with your desire to be treated like everyone else. |

Yes, foam mattresses have pretty good insulative qualities. No big deal if you don't sleep warm, but if you do, a foam mattress will cause you to sleep even warmer and could make you uncomfortable.
Some of the places I've been to will try to sell you some sort of cotton mattress pad to go on top of the foam mattress. They claim it helps reduce the heat, and it probably does, but I couldn't help but notice that this add-on increases the price tag, too, anywhere from $30 to $50.
That probably explains why I still sleep on a cheap-ass futon. |
