Re: [northeast] Verizon FIOS status in Philadelphia (19118) That's normal, since all COs have different timing or schedules for different lines to be worked on or screwed up in advance of FiOS. We already got a new modem back in May, hasn't helped. In March when it started we had a Westell 2200, then in April/May we got the 6100G, no change; until line/splicing work was done on line on 6/15/10. Back again after 4-7Mbps tier upgrade and changed over to ADSL2+ it's a more twitchy DSL std, than the G.DMT mode was. G.DMT allowed for a lot more flexibility in environmental conditions and fluctuations in Noise margin than ADSL2+ does. On G.DMT our downstream margin was regularly 12-14db. Now it's 5.5-7db.
I found one FDT, may be similar to yours but it's closed up so I can't see what you could inside. I had to walk all the way up to Cedar and Somerset. Technically that little bump out lane from Aramingo Ave emerging from the railroad tunnel to make that right onto Somerset or go straight onto Cedar St. I took a few pictures I'll post them later. It's FiOS because the cable was the standard Corning Optical cable, and the FDT was zip-tied to the phone pole and it looks the same as Phillysim's. Also, Cedar St. was listed on VZ's FTTP list for PA a several times.

ARKx join:2005-02-13 Philadelphia, PA | We had another DSL Tech. came out yesterday around 3:40-5:55PM. After numerous tests locally and at the MCO he determined that we should be provisioned for not more than 3.5Mbps, so in other words our line cannot handle the 5Mbps tier. This is way different than the case back in ~2000-2004, when their system would not let you order a speed tier unless your line qualified for it, by maintaining a sync on it consistently, and your loop length was in proper range, etc.
I hate this policy of selling all services to everyone regardless of whether they qualify or not, it only applies to FiOS NOT DSL.

 | i received email notification sept 21th 2010 saying fios service available, 2 or 3 month ago verizon was doing some work and needed access to the backyard, in zipcode 19148, i ordered right away, and had it installed, up and running 2 days later. |

 | I see so much FIOS cable around the neighborhood (19119) I can just about "reach out and touch" the service. But I see no signs of work going on around here this week, which may or may not be coincidental to the fact that my dsl connection has been rock solid all week for the first time since July. Might also have to do with the new modem VZ sent me on Monday. |
|
 | if there is fios cable work around the block, probably expect another 2 to 4 month before they can take fios order, i did called verizon after they ran the fios cable to the backyard, and the rep said just go to verizon website, check your address for availability, if it is not yet available, sign up your email on the notification list, and they will send you email once they ready to take order. |

That picture I posted earlier at Gaul & Allegheny of FiOS activity was back on 11/17/09 at ~2:15PM we're starting to close in on 1 year, and we still can't order FiOS. At that point from the CO to there everything is underground, so there's no way to tell if any cable has been run underground or not. However, I know the conduit has been run, since there were 2 spools of conduit, and the picture clearly shows only 1 partial spool left, and the contractor I spoke with confirmed it was for FiOS in 2010. The cables only come out at our alley in back and I haven't seen any fiber-optic cable there. I know in other locations, they've done splicing, and other cable work over night, I read it on a post here from someone in a suburban community somewhere. Also, I noticed over the past year, VZ orange spray paint along Allegheny at Gaul, and slightly down our block where their lines split off to feed each side of our block via alleys that dump out right there. There was also a trench dug along that line from one side of the block to the other, which has since been properly filled up and repaved over. However, NO orange conduits have come out to either sides' alley pole feeding to either the even or odd side of the block. Maybe, in the next month or two we'll finally see the outside conduit and fiber-optic cable. I will definitely post pictures if I see activity on our block.
Oh, attached are the pictures I mentioned I took last Sunday I think it was, 9/19 and was going to post. Sorry, you can't see the FDT very well, but the sun was setting and the camera is only a 2MP LG VX8700 no zoom. Our DSL so far is more steady since the downgrade back to "3Mbps". We still don't get the 3Mbps only 2.88Mbps, but it's still better than new gen dial-up(less than 1.5Mbps) or 1.5Mbps.
Enjoy, Alan. |

 | reply to philly We too are in Chestnut Hill right along the park, and the Verizon trucks were parked for almost 3 weeks along Chestnut Hill Avenue and Crefeld Street- the senior tech who spent 3 days under a tent "lighting" the system said that it would be a matter of weeks and we would all be getting service invites- that was almost 3 months ago! And I can't get ANYONE at Verizon who can give a straight answer... others in Chaestnut Hill- Highland Avenue etc. ALL have had it for about 6 months...so I am BAFFLED!!!!! |

 | I'm in the Laverock area of Glenside. I cannot get FiOS yet. But FiOS is available in my neighborhood (TV and Internet is available 4 houses up the street (and across a Peco right-of-way) and the house across the street has Internet available). The FiOS guys working in the neighborhood in April told me told me that FiOS would be available "soon."
Is there any deployment history that might indicate when FiOS will be available for me? |
|
 | reply to philly Update from Fairmount area (19130) of Philly. Just received notification that FIOS is now available in my part of the neighborhood, and a phone call to Verizon confirmed this. This is a little two months after the fiber optic cable laying activity that occurred at the end of August into September.
Pricing for FIOS phone & internet is $65 for first 6 months then $75 for next 18 months. Was told that additional fees + tax would add about $14 per month. I was hoping to to lock in at the $65/month for two years, but was told this was not possible. So I have not yet pulled the trigger. |
|
 | Well, I am at $83/month for Verizon phone + DSL, so those FIOS prices sound pretty good to me. I'd pull that trigger in a heart beat.
Taxes and fees add an additional $14 to my bill, btw.
Did you get any prices for including TV service as well? |

 | reply to philly I'm moving to the Chestnut Hill area and have been doing lots and lots of research for the last two weeks on Fios in my area. The leasing officer says Fios is 'coming soon' and its available 3 houses down but not in my little nook on East Mermaid street.
Does anybody know anything about this? Estimate on availability? I really don't want to start service and then change it and I really don't want to call *cough*comcast*cough* |
|
 | "Coming soon" is the stock answer to "When?" At this point, I take "soon" to mean anything from three weeks to three years.
If you look around the area, you will see evidence of Fios on many utility pools. You may even see evidence of individual residential connections. But you will never get a better answer than "soon" until they are actually ready to do an install.
I have been following the Fios rollout in this area for the last year or so. It is happening, but very, very slowly. If anybody has been recently connected or knows of such in the 19118/19119 area, I'd be interested to hear about it. The only one I know of in the past few weeks is in the Gowen and Ardleigh vicinity. |

ARKx join:2005-02-13 Philadelphia, PA | shutupndig, you're right all the way through. The only way you can better more specialized answers is by knowing your CO, name and location, and your VZ issue phone number. If you don't have a VZ phone number then you're a little stuck by address.
The advanced VZ techs that know the infrastructure and the plans would know better by CO name or could identify it by its address, and your VZ phone number. You can use the CO finder here on BBR, under tools I think. However, VZ uses a different CO naming convention which is in the City Of Phila FTTP Franchise agreement doc w./ VZ. I think I already posted that a few months ago. It's on around page 59-62.

 | I'm in the Germantown CO but right on the border of the Chestnut Hill CO. The houses in the neighborhood with Fios hook-ups are all in the Chestnut Hill CO.
According to the franchise agreement docs, Chestnut Hill and Germantown COs are both in the Phase I buildout (within 4 years), but CH is first on the list and Germantown is 10th. The list is not alphabetical, so if it implies the order in which work will be done, I could still be two to three years out.
Nonetheless, I see Fios cable strung all over, well beyond the CO boundaries, so maybe I could be a bit more optimistic. |

ARKx join:2005-02-13 Philadelphia, PA | Yup you're right shutupndig. I hope you get it soon too, lol, I wish VZ would shutup n dig. Enought with the press releases and start digging more to light our service up.
Anyway, have any of you come across this site; »www.broadbandsoho.com/Verizon_FT···rial.htm I think I saw a picture of the FDT posted earlier.

Yamaki join:2008-09-22 Narberth, PA | reply to philly Hey guys, I've got some brief news for you. I had a Verizon HSI tech here to fix my DSL line just a few minutes ago, and I asked her about the status of FiOS in 19104. She said that they just had a meeting about it today and it should be coming to this area in about 18 months. The current issue is that Penn and Drexel are having conflicts about Verizon's deployment--they lease fiber from Verizon and they're having some sort of problem coming to an agreement. I didn't catch the exact details. Something about the universities already having their own fiber networks and not wanting to ditch Verizon's copper phone lines. |

 | reply to philly Thanks guys!
I was confused on one thing, and I tried to find the answer myself but I was unsuccessful.
What does CO mean? I went to tools and couldn't find any other hints there, and i couldn't find what my CO was. |
