Re: [northeast] Verizon FIOS status in Philadelphia (19118)

I'm in 19115, still no joy. There has been additional lines and such added to the telephone poles over the past year, the latest being long black cylinders. Does anybody know exactly what Verizon installs on the poles for FIOS?

Its funny if you look at the map, you will see that there is a 'hole' in the coverage. Its like all the surrounding has Fios but 19128~.~

So I've been posting in this thread for about a year and a half now while waiting for Fios in 19119. Finally, I think it is here. Have an install appt. set for Wednesday, Feb. 1.

Had a "Fios is Here" flyer stuck in my door when I got home with notice of a Fios "tent" in the neighborhood so I went over and talked to them, but the deal offered by ordering on line was better, even though the flyer insisted it wouldn't be.

So we shall see...

Hey, I have been following your and others in this topic. You are lucky guy; I guess they are not going in order on the phase list. I am still looking and I do not see any work getting done up in my area, I am getting tired of waiting. When you can, can you post how everything went and how you like it

Good luck, DBB. From the time I first saw Verizon stringing cable in the 19119 area until I got connected, which was last Wednesday, it was a good two years. On the other hand, other people in the area have had it for quite a while, so there's that for you.

The install, when it finally came, went well. Took about three hours. Then I spent the next three days learning the system. The internet is about the same as the Comcast connection it replaced. Digital voice has a few more features than the old Verizon POTS line and I appreciate that. TV is quite different what with channels in all different locations, a different remote and a different guide to navigate. Now that I have mostly figured it all out, I'd rate it a bit better then Comcast with the main difference being a more powerful search function with the guide.

The one downside came when I discovered that the USB ports on the Actiontec router are basically non-functioning so I had to move my printer to a different location to put it on the network.

Bottom line is that I expect this will save me $50-$60 a a month on TV, Internet and phone for what is essentially the same or slightly better service.

Glade to hear that everything went nice ans smooth shutupndig, my uncle live outside of philly and he has it and he said the channels in all different locations is hard to get use to but the picture is great. My DSL went down so that is why i did not write back sooner, Verizon sent me a new modem/router. So far it is running will will see.

Now i look at the list of streets and not my street is not on it anymore , It was on for 8 months till now, shutupndig i saw that your street went of the list, Did it ever come back on the list.

Thanks

I quit paying attention to that list after my street had been on it for months with nothing happening. I could see the build-out progressing very slowly in my neighborhood -- it seemed there would be a flurry of activity, then nothing for a while. When they hung the cable on the pole in my back yard last summer, I thought we were almost there. Then it was another six months before I got connected.

I have found Verizon to be very tight lipped when it comes to inquiries about Fios availability. The company line always seems to be "soon." In December a Verizon tech came around to work on some problems with my old phone line. He was very chatty on a range of topics, but when I asked about Fios coming, he mumbled something along the line of "Bershtug gugmiggle dee popple zood." That was after I repeated the question when he seemed to not hear me the first time.

·Verizon FiOS

reply to shutupndig
It's been a long time since I posted in this thread, but congrats on finally getting it. I did a review on FiOS, but now that I'm past the half year point I can pretty much confirm that the internet is phenomenal, phone is what it is - but selective call forwarding is better than none at all, but TV leaves a lot to be desired unless you have a good HDTV.

I have a Best Buy Samsung 530A which isn't top of the line, so I generally don't see a difference in picture quality that others do, and because of this I've grown to miss certain HD channels that FiOS simply doesn't offer (The Comcast Network, Cartoon Network, G4, BBC, and a few others). I might mix my services once my promo ends in June, use FiOS for my internet and phone but go back to Comcast strictly for TV. Weird thing to hear, I know, but I'm missing out on some of my favorite channels in HD because of FiOS.

One thing that I will say in favor of FiOS TV is that when it comes to troubleshooting, FiOS is superior to Comcast. "VzInHomeAgent", an app for Windows and Mac, is identical to what Comcast employees use for tier 1 tech support as far as doing a "hard hit" to multiple boxes go. Also when you go through the whole unplug/replug song and dance, FiOS VOD and guide data loads up instantly where as it takes at least 30 minutes for VOD and the guide to come back on Comcast boxes. So for the most part I'm happy with my services, but I do wish FiOS TV would try to keep up with present day Comcast/Xfinity with their channels and now tablet (iOS and Android) Apps.
